Cool...it was a pretty good movie too.

I'll have my sun glasses ready and await the earth shattering boom.

Now that would be a sight!
We'll see cataclysmic events of the 15th Century again? We'll "see."

Im sure there's tons of data to be gained from actually seeing that.
The range of possible brightness makes me worry a bit. At least how bright it may be from here.

Do "we" have any idea on how long the process is from normal to supernova ?

As far as brightness I heard we will be able to see it during the day. Unknown if true.

Edit - article says that as well. Didn’t read at first.

We've seen the afterglow of plenty, but no one has ever watched one happen. The closest we've managed was to get observations going within 3 hours of the event (caught by accident during an automated sky survey).

    Interesting, sure.
    Until it cooks us.

    "Wow, how pretty!"
    "Awesome!"
    "And it's getting brighter!"
    "I know!"
"I mean, it's really getting brighter..."
"Wow. Uhm...how bright will it get?"
    "It's still getting brighter..."
"Is it getting hot in here?"
    "We're outside."
    "It's getting hotter! I don't like it!"
    "I think we'll be..."
    "Oh....the sky is..."
    "On fire!"
    "Oh shi...."

Cool stuff there for certain OP...However, our galaxy (Milky Way) may be on course to collide with another galaxy in only 3-4 billion years, give or take a few million...It’s predicted that it would be a total wipeout for both galaxies...Kinda makes small potatoes of our troubles now....thanks for posting...

I don't know if any military fliers do Celestial Navigation legs anymore. But we used to do them on most training missions in the 60's. Betelgeuse was one of the favorite stars the navigators liked to have the EW shoot during the cell nav leg.

You mean Andromeda, but it won't be a wipe out at all. Any given solar system will hardly even notice. There is so much empty space in a galaxy, the vast majority of bodies will just pass each other by. Gravity will sling some out completely, but the rest will just form a larger mega galaxy.

remember, what ever we will see already "happened" 600-800 years ago.... It's like a trip back in time.
