Best way to cook an elk steak?

    Wife's out of town with the girls... so it's just me and my son. So for dinner tonight we're cooking up some elk tenderloin, garlic mashed potatoes, etc, and watching some kung fu movies.

    What's your favorite recipe? and/or movie?

    How about the old reliable Montreal Steak seasoning and pan fry in butter and together with garlic and onions.?

    Firstly,you must bag the moose!
    It will take a rather (LARGE) bag for mooses can be (LARGE)!
    You must jump out of the tree,with this (LARGE) bag and some how pursuade it to get into the bag!Talk about it's Mama.
    break down all self-esteem until he submits.
    Now you got this beast in the bag,you must drag all 1600lbs. of him to your chain saw !
    You know what? Screw this Moose thing ,1/4 pounder will do!

    With such a succulent cut of a delicious animal, I would only use the basics, salt and pepper. I tend to favor smoked salt, hickory or alder, fresh cracked pepper. Take it off at 125 IT and put some roll butter or good quality butter on top of it, foil over it and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. Also add a hunk of chunk wood to the heat source, if you have a charcoal fire. Elk is money as far as meat goes. No need to over season.

    I marinate almost all my meats in Daddy Hinkle's. I had some elk not long and that rocked in it.

    Salt and pepper, place in a hot cast iron, brown all sides, put in oven (still in cast iron skillet) at 375 degrees until internal temp is at your liking. About 130 for rare, 140 med., let rest for about 15 minutes under foil.

    Well, the deed is done. I got dogged by my son who went to the movies w/ some friends. Traitor. :supergrin: I went with an indoor method, mostly because I got lazy. I did dig the red potatoes out of my garden, as well as pic the tomatoes.

    Pan seared then into the oven. About medium

    Garlic mashed potatoes
    Tomato, onions and jalepeno with a splash of balsamic vinegar & sea salt
    sharp cheddar crumbles
    Elk was seasoned w/ salt, pepper and a little of homegrown basil/savory. Seared in a mix of butter and coconut oil. Threw a little flour in the pan afterward for the gravy.

    Looks delicious! The best elk steak I have had was done on charcoal with salt, pepper, and a very light dusting of cinnamon. Tasted better than it sounds.

    hmmm...delicious. Elk is some of the best eatin' there is.

    An Elk Roast absolutely rocks.
