I avoid that city when I can. If drive anything but a car even more. Normally I39 from Rockford then East only adds a few dozen miles. But this time it will be a lot out of the way.
I have been thru after 10pm to 4am. Was not too bad. In a car @1pm wasn't bad.
So it's been yrs. Rockford, thru Chicago I90 what are some of the least congested times during work week? Then around Fort Wayne. Looks like a toll road. Any idea how they are set up for folks with no electronic pass thing?
Cash line? Can you use credit cards? In CO one road I was told they mailed you a envelope to pay?? (I drove around)
Some cities you avoid @7am to 10am. 4pm till 6pm traffic normally is ok. But many yrs back I recall (being told) Chicago was PITA 4am to 9pm

Electronic toll passes are a no-brainer, especially now that each state recognizes the transponders of other states. There are two good reasons to have them: (1) They let drivers avoid what can be mind-numbingly slow manual lines; and (2) In Illinois the cash tolls are double the what they charge electronic toll passes. You can apply for a transponder at this link: https://www.getipass.com/.

If you don't get a transponder, you have to take the manual/cash lanes. You can then go on-line and pay.

When I travel to and around Chicago, my experience has been that rush hour begins at 6:45 a.m. and doesn't really let up until about 1 p.m. Then by 3:30 p.m., it begins to build again.

Congestion on I-90 between Rockford and O'Hare Airport tends to stick to the traditional rush hour times of 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

If you don't use the Waze app, you might want to consider it. It's invaluable for rerouting around traffic jams and accidents, as well as giving a heads-up about speed traps ahead.

You didn't ask but, living in MN, you undoubtedly know IL doesn't recognize any other state's CCL. CCWers who stop in that state, even if just to top off the gas tank, will need to leave any firearms locked in the car: http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/illinois.pdf.

    Complete PITA.

    Safe travels.

I Considered the ferry services. But driving is cheaper...
Thanks for updates of when rush hrs are. Places you are likely to need a gun, are places you can't legally carry one.

I've heard that you can be timed between toll booths to check your speed. Don't know if there's any truth to that. I haven't gone thru that area since the '70's.

    Slamdunc,

I'm not certain where you received the above information, but I regret to say that it is inaccurate.

HandgunLawUS (http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/illinois.pdf), Guns To Carry (https://www.gunstocarry.com/gun-laws-state/illinois-gun-laws/), and U.S.Concealed Carry (https://www.usconcealedcarry.com), all note that ILLINOIS DOES NOT RECOGNIZE ANY OTHER STATE'S CCL.

However, residents of Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas, and Virginia may, if they wish, apply for a Non-Resident CCL from Illinois. Residents of other states may NOT apply for an Illinois CCL.

I hope this clarifies the matter for anyone travelling through that G-dforsaken state.

    Stay safe.

You are correct, I went into reverse and listed the states that recognize Illinois CCL.

Rockford, IL to Ft. Wayne, IN?

    39->88->294->94->65->30

Only ~10 miles further than through the city. If you go through the self-serve manual lane you can pay the tolls on 88/294 with a credit card or cash.

10am-2pm. To avoid the city you could take I-355 south and then head East on I-80.

LSD is no better during high traffic times. It used to be but no more. Then you have to get to it and then know the routes to best get you back to the Interstate. First off I-90 isn't a tollway thru Chicago but it is if you stay on it past the city. Traffic is FUBAR basically any time during the day especially going north "west on the sign" as you approach downtown past Comisky park. Now known as "Dontgiveadamn Park". Until you get past the Loop its a crawl. Just stay all the way to the left and stay away from the "I-290 merge" lanes. Be aware once you get thru the Loop the far west lane closes so wing back right a lane or two after I-290.

If your going to Fort Wayne IN. then taking the Skyway will save you time instead of looping around 94 all the way back. The SkyWay cost's at least $5 to get on and they might clip you a 2nd time before you get to the Calumet RD turn off and 49 south. But its worth it. The I-90 Skyway save's you a lot of time and you get a good view of the rust belt on it.

When we go thru to visit our son I make sure we get to the Skyway by 0600 and avoid everything. BTW if your coming/going from Rockford then use the express lanes to get thru town.

The best time is over night past 0000 hrs tho if your going thru on the weekends you might want to take out survival insurance between the drunks and the gangsters. 1000 hrs to 1400 hrs is the best time during weekdays, tho it still blows. Weekends aren't to bad anytime unless you catch a sports time or an air show when everyone is crashing into everyone while looking at the airplanes.

If you get hit and your really, really lucky the other driver will admit to speaking english and might even have a D.L. and insurance. But I doubt it.

Just look at the bright side. You could always be driving thru New York city, which is the ultimate hell hole for the motorist.

You can use the Waze app to estimate drive times with different start times and see the difference in time in graph form.
