I have heard the 4-cell Maglite flashlight (15" long and 36 oz.) recommended as a blocking or impact (on legs) weapon. Maglite's new LED line doesn't offer the 4 cell size, just a three cell and a 6 cell (19" long and 50 oz.).

Would the 6 cell be too long and heavy to be effective?

As a rule of thumb, when using a heavy duty flashlight for blocking, you want one whose length when held in conventional grasp (thumb and index finger around the front of the light) will extend down your forearm just short of the elbow. The reason is, if it's much longer, the impact of the block can drive the butt end of your flashlight into your own elbow.

I'd advise to keep looking until you find one the right length. A tip: the narrow C-cell size flashlight body handles much faster than the thicker, heavier D-cell style.
