What would be the best choice for stopping a moving vehicle,

assuming you're shooting the engine block / radiator,

7.62x39 FMJ

or

5.56 green tip?

Regardless of the caliber, it has to have a large capacity.

.50 Beowulf won't work for me.

Anything else that works besides the .50's

takes very little to puncture a radiator. but depending on the vehicle and radiator size, it may take a bit before it makes much difference. as for the block may be something belt fed?

Didn't Myth Busters do an episode on this? I think a 5.56 or 308 round will do very little to stop a moving vehicle unless you hit the driver of said vehicle. Sure you can damage the radiator, but the vehicle will still run for some time til it overheats and the motor seizes up.

Pretty much what a .50 BMG does....your common "civilian" calibers wont do much for an instant stop.

So the .50 Beowulf won't work for you. Now you wanna try the 5.56 green tip? Wow, talk about lack of common sense.

Niether will effectively stop a vehicle in the time frame you want it to happen. If you want to stop a vehicle with those calibers 5.56 or 7.62 x 39 you need to shoot the driver.

A friend was a deputy and known as the best shot in the department.
So he was backstopping a roadblock with his .30-06 full of USGI AP.
He didn't get to try it out, though. Too bad for scientific research, lucky for the suspects.

Only episode I remember seeing was the one where they used phone books to create an armored vehicle. The phone books worked very well up to .50 BMG.

+1

Its just better to take out the driver to stop a vehicle, unless you have a .50 and use multiple rounds. Even a single .50 round will not be 100%effective. You will be suprised how far and how fast a civilian vehicle will still travel with a flat tire, and leaking fluids. I seen it a few times in LE car chases.

Any chance of telling us the likely scenario in which a vehicle needs to be stopped by gunfire? My first guess is moonshiners?

If you think it's "stupid" or a dumb question, then don't post in the thread, your comment is just as worthless.

As goes for the .50 Beowulf, i'd have to buy a whole new upper, everything else etc, and from what i've looked at the magazines only hold 7 rounds.

So from the general consensus, any modern high capacity "assault" rifle, is not remedial for disabling engines.

Thank you for the HELPFUL comments.

I've been given access to several junked vehicles and a large area of land, 6 of the 7 cars are able to be started, but not driving condition.

I wanted to test various calibers on the running engines of each vehicle.

Currently,

7.62x39

5.56

7.62x54R - the best bet IMO

12 ga, 1oz slug

9mm

and 40 S&W

I wanted to test the most "effective" against the least effective, which IMO would be 9mm, anything else .380, .22LR just isn't common in any carry condition.

I'm not going to spend $1,000 on a rifle that can only shoot single shots of .338 etc, If I end up buying a rifle for testing, I'm going to keep it for something useful.

From a mechanical pov only sure stop is to kill the driver. Even if you crack the block the car can still push on for a little bit. But I would aim for the hood not the radiator a few holes in the intake manifold would cause the engine to stall a cracked head will also stall it fairly quick but a car can run on -1cyl for a while

If that's the way you'd choose to stop a moving vehicle with a rifle, you should probably give up now.

My answer would otherwise be, any one you can hit the driver with.

12 gauge, Brenneke, preferably the big boy black magic magnum. Inexpensive and readily available. Should do the trick as well as anything else you are likely to actually have
