I always sample the BBQ and Ma/Pa restaurant hamburgers everywhere I travel. Here's my pick for the best hamburger and BBQ in the USA:

    Hamburger:
Mitchell's Family Restaurant (Shamrock, TX): I ordered the house burger there and the waitress replied, "Is it just for you?" That $5 burger covered the plate!! And man it was as juicy and tasty as it was big! Just off I-40.

    BBQ:
Carolina Barbeque (New Ellenton, SC): Pulled pork BBQ with hickory smoke flavor in EVERY strand of the meat. Absoultely mouth-watering. Combine the meat with a plate of hash and rice and you, my friends are in for treat!

What are your nominations? Sorry, guys, it's near dinner time and I've got rumblies in my tumblie.

Best hamburger: Hudsons Hamburger in Coeur d'Alene ID. Best burger you will ever have for under $2. Not a typo. The burgers are less than two dollars. You get pickle and onion at no charge, and cheese is extra. NO fries, NO salad, non of that stuff. Just very very good hamburger. All made frest while you sit at the counter. No booths. They are always busy.

Sir, there must be a typo. You accidentally typed TWO dollars. I know to some a 5 and a 2 are easily confused. Just trying to help out, here.

Some of the best barbacue I have ever ate was done by a friend. He caters and I have had his several times. Damn good stuff. My barbacue is pretty good but I am still tinkering with my sauce. One day I will get it "right" but I am just close right now.

Snappy Lunch in Mayberry (Mount Airy, NC) has pretty good hamburgers. Less than $3, maybe around $2.50? Your choice of breaded or all-meat. Even better is the famous Pork Chop Sandwich for $3 ;) It is hard to get in there for all the tourists wanting to get their own Pork Chop Sandwiches but the wait is well worth it.

The best BBQ in the Memphis area is at Interstate BBQ, which incidentally is in the WORST part of town but doesn't suffer for it. It's one of those "sloppy" BBQ places.

The best Burger in town is at Huey's.

I use 2 lbs lean ground beef and 1 lb. Turkey, the Liptons Onion soup mix, chopped green onions, 1/2 chopped sweet onion, some Tony's, cracked pepper, Worchestershire, and teriaki sauce.
about 3/4 lb patties served on a split Hoagie buns.

Best hamburger I ever 'et was made by a guy named John with ground venison... dice and saute onion, red pepper and some minced garlic. Let the sauteed veggies cool and blend with the venison. Grill the patties over hardwood or charcoal and serve with finely minced, sauteed and reduced mushrooms, an acorn squash puree and 1985 Cos d' Estournel. Rustic elegance. Unbelievable.

Having lived in Memphis for 21 of my 22 years of life, I would have to agree with SouthernGirl that the best barbeque in the entire world is found inside Memphis' city limits.

For the sloppiest BBQ sandwich head out to Pollard's BBQ in Whitehaven.

For the best pulled pork plate you just cannot beat Corky's on Poplar.

For ribs the only place to go is The Rendevous in a little alley downtown.

As for burgers, Huey's on Madison is the best for all around atmosphere and a solid burger. But for the best heart-stopping, artery-clogging burger experience in town you have to head down to Dyer's on Beale Street. Imagine if you can a 1/2 pound of meat smashed to a 1/4 inch thickness and then dropped in a deep fryer for several minutes only to emerge dripping with down-home southern goodness before being smothered with cheese and all the fixins.

All glory, laud and honor to Memphis, home of the best food I've ever had !!!!! :) ;f

The best hamburger I've ever had was/is in Reserve, New Mexico. The restaurant used to name Grandma T, but have been known to change hands and names a few times and then coming back to Grandma T again.;P They got their ground beef from a local source, and the burgers are massive!!! Guaranteed heartattack specials.

The next one up is in Redondo Beach, California. Small mom'n pop joint called CJ's. The rest of the food are mediocre but DAMN!!! That burger is awesome!!! It's hand patted and greasy in that good way. More importantly, they are very tasty due to seasoning.
