No. Especially not at 25 yards. And neither is enough to ethically kill deer by any measure I'm aware of.
Most defensive practice loads in both range from 350-450 fpe. There are some super hot 45acp loads from companies like Corbon and Buffalo Bore that get up above that.

I'm not going to debate you on 9 vs. 45 energy because all of the ballistics for different loads are out there for everyone to see that your general statement is false. But none of those are appropriate for deer hunting unless it's a survival situation. And this is coming from someone who actually killed a 10 pointer with a .45 Corbon. He'd been hit in the back leg by a rifle and was laying in my yard. I go out to put him out of his exhausted misery and he runs. I hit him right in the heart and he went another 10 yards on 3 legs. I had to put a second shot through his chest. When we finally figured out who originally shot it, the deer had run half a mile and jumped 3 fences with 3 legs. Even after all that a perfect hit from a .45 was barely enough. Don't go hunting with a 9mm. It's not what an ethical hunter would do.

Shooting holes in some deer, so they can die slowly a couple of days later and go to waste, because you think it would be cool to hunt deer with your 9mm, doesn't really make me think you are a serious shooter or deserving of any respect. This is the kind of BS idea the internet tactical-wannabe ninjas come up with.

9mm has as much energy as a .45 and it will penetrate further. I also have a .45 but I'd take 9mm where penetration is needed. I also have a GP100 but I honestly shoot the 9mm a little more consistently.

I wasn't suggesting you use a .45 - notice I said that I don't. I was suggesting that you are using inadequate skills and inadequate gun to play a game that involves shooting animals and watching them run off. If you were "hunting" you'd use a gun that would get the job done.

No.

Where I the world do people get the idea that anything under 900 ft.lbs AT IMPACT is acceptable for ethical deer hunting? 250gr at 900 FPS would be half that.
I agree completely. My comment was meant to be satire. I suggested a experimental/ wildcat cartridge from Russia. Used specifically in the Vintorez internally suppressor sniper rifle. The rifle was popularized in the video game Rainbow Six.

Please don't carry out this plan. There is a high likelihood that it will fail. 9x19 may technically be adequate, but you will have to make a perfect shot and even then it will likely take a while for the animal to expire. This is a bad idea...

Most handguns are marginal people stoppers whose only redeeming virtue is they are convenient to carry and easy to conceal.

While some calibers are barely adequate for killing deer like a 10mm or a .357 Magnum they are really only adequate if conditions and range are perfect. THe 9mm is not on the right side of that margin in any load configuration in any situation. Just because its legal to do something doesn't mean its ethical. IMO with the experience of hunting deer over 40 years and having killed big game all over the world what you are doing is not ethical.

The practical problem that most internet gun debates like this fail to grasp is that we argue over stupid things like the size of our deer, ft/lbs of energy, expanding bullets, blah blah blah... Its really quite meaningless and the fact that you have to rationalize your decision by arguing facts like this tells me you already know you are on the wrong side of this decision.

The reason I make the above statement with certainty is quite simple. Deer don't stand still and perfectly broadside...ever. They always move, they always change angles, the angles are always different... If they take a step as your trigger breaks and they step the wrong direction you now have a gut shot deer with a friggin 9mm to boot! Its happened to me more than once but the difference is I use enough gun and cause enough damage that it will still kill the thing in short order--trust me a deer gutshot with a .270 winchester will still expire relatively quickly--not ideal--but the reality of hunting is we are dealing an infinite number of variables... Oh but you'll be careful and pick your shots... Sure you will. When the buck of a lifetime strolls by at 35 yards you are going to sit tight and let him walk because your self imposed limit for your 9mm is 25 yards....check. Hunting animals in the field is NEVER that clean, the hunters are never as good as they are shooting off a bench, the animals never stay still, there is always brush, branches, trees etc that get between us and the game. In short conditions are almost always less than ideal--and you are using a gun that requires everything to be perfect....and you aren't perfect and its very likely you will be called on to make a shot in less than perfect conditions and your decision is poor judgement IMO.

Do what you want its a free country but you posted the topic and solicited opinions. People do all kinds of stupid things hunting like trying to shoot animals at 1,000 yards.. I don't get it... But I don't require people to meet my personal expectations of ethics and morality when it comes to hunting... So you got what you asked for and I'm sorry if it offends you...

Old school Black Talons ?
You will not get much penetration with fast self defense expanders like that. Let alone a pass through.

This is where the XTP shines. I think its perfect deer bullet. Ive killed lots of deer with the XTP (45 cal, 300 grain) from a muzzleloader. Gonna barrow a glock 20 again this year for deer gun week. I arrowed a buck last year, 2 days before the season so i never got the chance.

I'd go with something in 9mm Mauser.

You shoot 6" groups at 25 yards with a completely inadequate cartridge and you want to hunt deer with it? I shoot smaller groups with a .45 at 50 yards and it's still not good enough for deer hunting.
What he said. Totally unethical. The Scoring ring on a 100 doe is 2-3 inches.
