Well I would like 70 gr SPs, but in fact any 556 is going to be ok for what your thinking. Now most will never be shooting beyond 100-200 yards. so see whats good for you at the distances your thinking. I found that 70Gr. SPs work well for me out to 500 yards. 762X39 the 124 gr SPs are doing well. 762X51 well I like the 168 gr HPs. 9mm 124Gr. HPs, .45s 200 gr HPs. but for general use whatever you have will work.

Ouch, you're right. Or if do zero their sights it's at POI = POA at 15 or 25 yards, which is a disaster at 100 yards.

I can’t afford a dozen cases or so of OTM so I stack M193 and M855.

Definitely! But I would encourage you to have some laser gun accurate 75-77 grain OTM to "complete you!" A few boxes of 20 would do it.

I have a little less than a case of Black Hills 77gr, and a half case of Black Hills 69gr., but my go to rifle is zeroed for M193.

    I did the same thing.

Got some other 62 grain soft point lying around also.

Then a few hundred 55 grain target stuff that should work in a pinch.

If I can recall these were used by our armed forces because they were not dsigned to expand. Rather they were designed as match target ammo. When they are made with the crimping cannelure they have a tendency to yaw and break in two on impact. Since they were not designed or intended to be an expanding bullet they do not violate the Hague conventions. In reality the hollow fore section will collapse if soft enough, or if jacket is hard enough they act as FMJ in both cases. But the cannelure will enable the bullet to break in two.

well i'm late to the game... my wife questioned me on my 12 gauge option, not enough rounds for Armageddon... couldn't let her think i was a wimp, so i followed her advise and bought my first AR... had to put quite a few miles on the car looking for ammo, but was lucky enough to score a modest amount of 62 gr X-Tac. not enough to properly break her in but i'm still trying to decide on sights and optics:dunno:. i didn't tell her it doesn't come with any but truthfully, if i'm defending my castle inside the house, i'm pretty sure point and blast will get the job done... what ammo to buy is the last question i'm asking...

Indeed. If I ever need to disable a vehicle I'm loading up my M1 Garand with 30.06 AP ammo

    Hey, worked fine in WWII

Are you really that uninformed about M855 terminal effects?

M855.. factory ammo.. good enough to load deep.. reliable.

My .308 rifles are my more favored defensive rifle choice.. grab a vest that holds 20 of the 20 round mags and your good for a while.
