223/556 in fmj has definitely done more than ice pick through tissue. Lots of velocity, extremely tapered

That's why many states don't allow it for deer

Hunters that can are using the 75-80 grain otm/hp rounds for hunting

I have 1400 rounds of Nato spec M855 stashed away.

I also have a few mags each of 75g TAP, Federal 55g bonded SP, and 64g Gold Dot.

But my primary HD plan involves a shotgun loaded with buckshot.

I load mostly 55gr FMJ. Easy. Effective.

It's a bit sad to me that no one is talking barrel twist in this thread

Someone may comment "doesn't matter for angry mobs" I'm sure

If you're going to dump money into a quantity of ammo, know what works best in your barrel and hence gives you more options

Topically, that isn't going to be 55 grain

I'm going to go with "typically it is" on that one. Hence the reason for M193 almost universally used in all manner of barrel lengths in the military today. Unless you have some extreme twist rates you'll be fine with 55gr ammo.

I’m sure that the enemy does not care what they are shot with.

    True, that.

Ass-ton here. Bought it cheap, stacked it deep.

Plus, it's proven itself to be extremely accurate in my ARs (1-7 twists). Two with 1x-4x optics are zeroed with that stuff. Also running on the 77gn OTM diet is my suppressed SBR with an H1.

1:7 1:8 and 1:9 are not extreme. 55 grain is overspun and destabilizes with distance, will keyhole and be inaccurate. That's what the 62 grain corrected

I've not found that to be the case out to 300+ meters. Ever.

I score better with X-Tac XP 193 than Lake City XM 193. I buy X-Tac and AE 5.56. Why don't you investigate my post again. The man asked what works well, and in my rifles LC works fine, just not as good as X-Tac. Try it, you'll see.
I'll even go ya one further: my match rifle scores better with Winchester White Box NATO (not stamped LC,) than it does with LC-stamped cartridges.

Shoot XTC matches, guys have used that in a pinch and you will see that, especially "WTF" accuracy at 600 yards. Will most shooters ever shoot 600 yards, no, but if the discussion is "what's best" and not "what's okay" then 55 grain isn't the answer

The question was what's best for this insurrection, not competition shooting to the bleeding edge of it's ballistic viability ;)

Gonna be a tough one to claim self defense at 600M out.

LoL, well, yes, I guess "insurrection" distances are at closer range.

That aside, not a bad thing to know that the AR in common twists offers impressive accuracy even out to 1,000 yards with the heavier weight 75+ grain bullets

What if the bad guy was an Olympic Sprinter? True. Still, not a bad thing to have an 223 round that's deer size game capable.

    Totally agree

The average Joe isn't going to be doing any of that however. Probably lucky if they even zero their sights.
