Going hunting next week with Winchester lever 30-30. Open area with scattered trees. Will hopefully have shots from 100 to 250 yards. What hunting load do you recommend? What brand and grain do you prefer?

Last year my brother used the 30-30 Remingtion Coreloks in the 150grn and dropped two deer where they stood at around 50yrds. If you're asking what rounds to use you may want to practice that 250yrd shot with this rifle before you attempt it at a deer. Normally the 30-30 is a 200yrd max rifle for deer after that it starts loosing it's juice.

The 30-30 has been killing deer for an awful long time.

Any of the commercial 30-30 loads in the 150-170 range should work just fine on deer.

250 yards is pushing it for a 30-30. So the best one would be whatever is most accurate in your gun. The only way to know that for sure is to go out and try them.

You ought to consider getting a Marbles peep sight. You will keep the fast handling qualities of the lever rifle and have better sights than the standard open sights.

250 is definitely stretching the range of the 30-30. I would say it is more of a 150 yard gun, especially with 150gr bullets. Personally, I shoot 170gr Nosler Partitions in mine, but the Core-Lokt is probably just as good at 30-30 velocities.

Thanks. You're right, I would not take a shot beyond 200 yards. Probably not beyond 150. Thanks for the advice on ammo.

It warms my heart every time I here another person using the old lever guns. I leave my scoped 06 in the camp many times and carry my 94 in the brush. The thing is so light and fast I own two. I also added a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70 for larger game in the brush.

I got a Marlin 30A with a 4X Weaver on it, so I left it on. It liked 150g Remington Corelokts. At 100 yards, made nice small groups. :)

I hunted deer with a 7mm mag last year here in New Mexico. I'm just not very excited to do that again. Since then I've done a lot of practice with my Winchester 94 30-30 and I can't wait this year to walk around in the woods with this gun after some deer. I figure I need the best ammo I can get, my best shooting effort, and a lot of luck. But I'm more excited about this kind of challenge.

I just took my first mule deer (nice 3 point) three weeks ago with my Marlin 336 and a Remington 150 grain Core Lokt soft point. It was only about 20 yards, right through both lungs, dropped him instantly.

I love the 30-30 - my 30-06 just stayed in the truck the whole trip. I don't personally feel comfortable with it past 100 yds, but YMMV.

I am extremely excited to be using a 30/30. I bought mine early this year and have had a blast playing with it. It goes in the woods in one week.
