Nice bear Tom from Sauk! He’s a biggy! What was his weight?

My brother-in-law just took this one in Michigan’s UP, in the evening, on the 21st…

    I didn’t get drawn for a permit this year… :(

Don't really know his weight. The scale only went up to 440 lbs. My friend said that his bear weighed 550 last year and this bear is bigger than his. Due to the short time frame, I'll never know the weight. (His weight will proably grow heavier as the years go by)

    Sixgun,
Nope, stock 1895G 45-70, AO scout setup, leupold scout scope. Used Hornady 300 in front of 45.5 GR of IMR4198. Rained the entire afternoon.

My respect for you, even if I can only shoot bear in self defence situation. You know I love this animal...

That's a great bear my hat is off to you. Were you in a fixed tree stand or a portable? How far was the bear from your stand?

It was a portable wooden stand. Nailed to the tree with 1x2's. Stand went down hill to the side. I was about thirty yards from the bait.

Please give me some details about black bear...is it aggressive animal like Griz?
We have here only brown bear.
If I make a every day trip(on my legs - not by car) to black or brown bear area I should take some protection with me.
Do you think that some subrifle (like short AR 15 or Galil or "compact" FN) will be ok for this work?
It should be quite good for every day carry and powerful enough to protect from "worst contact" scenario.
    Give me your opinion. Thanks!

Black Bears are usually not aggressive. Most will run at the sight of humans. Exceptions being a sow with her cubs. The bear I shot knew I was there and didn't seem to mind.

I would recommend a major rifle caliber. 223/5.56 would definately not cut it. FAL in 7.62 NATO would be much better.

We were instructed to aim four inches below the shoulder hump from the side. This shot took out both shoulders and the spine. Bear went down immediately.

Hey Joe... I'd love to. Nothing like having several hundred pounds of eating machine real close. Tell mom to use 12 gauge with slugs. Kills bears dead!
