Be careful if you use short term rentals.

New software data mines the internet for video and photos you upload. So if you trash your Air B&B, no more telling the owners it was like that when you got there. They will already know what you did.

    Why would anybody do that?

Long time ago, in Texas for 727 training, I had a rental Ford Explorer. I was giving a colleague a ride to the sim. He asked if this was a rental, and why aren't we running it hard and through the dirt? I looked at him and said, "Because it doesn't belong to me." Made me wonder how he was going to treat the airplanes. :dunno:

I treat all equipment like it was mine. It bothers me to see people abuse machinery, just because it’s someone else’s headache. If St. Peter is a robot - I’ll clear the Pearly Gates on first attempt.

I got a rental yrs back in CA. I smelled burning oil. Found problem, called, did a redneck patch... brought it back. Iirc half price rental. Plus they paid for oil I put in... “most would drive till engine seized”. Had that with a Pinske truck.

Hell, I typically treat things I borrow or rent BETTER than if it were mine. If it's mine and I damage it I can live with it as it was my screw up. Do that to something that's not mine? It'll bother me no end. I've never understood that 'drive it like you rented it' mindset.

File under the respect category. Probably find they don’t treat anything with respect.

My sister rented a U-Haul truck to move my mom. The move was about 100 miles. Only went a short ways and the oil pressure light came on. Checked the dip stick and no oil showing. Bought oil, couple extra and traveled on. Kept checking it and adding oil the whole move. Turned the truck in and stacked up many empty oil cans on the counter. The U-Haul guy finally refunded the money spent, but acted like I was trying to pull a scam.

I always assume they'll know from the secret cameras.

No need for 'new software'.

I have the same feeling about hidden cameras.

But if they use secret cameras they might not be able to use them as evidence because someone was recorded illegally in a place they rented. If the renters post it on line, that’s a different story.

My son loaned a 20 foot trailer to a man he worked with that wanted to move his stuff.
When he returned the trailer it looked as though he had rebuilt everything on the trailer as well as painted it. My son would have gladly paid him for the work but he refused.
My son told me he wished he would borrow his boat.
That is the way we should be with someone else's property.

I always treat anything I am using as if it were my own, and NEVER abuse it
People who do are just plain A/H's

Always treat a rental just as if it were my own. It belongs to someone else. And I am very particular about my vehicles. FWIW, the next vehicle I buy will be a rental or lease return. Tired of paying depreciation prices of new vehicles. My youngest daughter just got a smoking deal on a GMC lease return Buick Enclave with clean carfax. Honestly, if she hadn't bought it, I would have.

I did a local rental truck. Drove 20 miles ran out of gas. On the way back to the drop off. Had to get a tow. They charged me the miles that it was towed.

On the Penske. I’m looking it over. “I just serviced it”. So I asked him to show me where to check oil...
He had trouble opening hood, when he found dipstick, it was 2 qts low. There was a roofing nail in tire...
You are only going 5 miles, we will send a service truck with oil, tire...”
Guy comes. No oil, pulls nail “I don’t think it’s leaking”. So I spit on hole. No bubbles. (Yet). At first refuel I bought a case of oil at WW (for not much more the 4 qts at gas station)
Fill gas, add oil, then trans bearing went. “We can bring a truck, you can move your crap to new (unknown quality) truck”
Roadside mechanic figured it was seal. Some seal softener, drive, add transmission fluid, drive. Wife’s car towed behind got coated.
I soon bought my first enclosed trailer.

Another thing I wondered. How much engine oil did it use?

When we were going to fly a B-52 for about 26 hours, we always checked the oil consumption record for each engine, to be sure the engine would not run out of oil during the flight. No way to add oil inflight.
