A while back, there was some mention of where to get the best BBQ in the KC area...In today's KC Star Magazine, there was a article on a group of people that have been trying BBQ places and reviewing them.. Here is their site.. http://www.gasbbq.net/
How did your favorite place stand up ??

I'm in that area on business from time to time, and I usually eat at "Fiorella's Jack's Stack BBQ" which got a 8.1 rating. I like that place a lot actually, especially their burnt ends.

Those reviewers clearly don't know their BBQ. Gates and Bryants have those other places beat, but are rated low. Go figure. :)

I'm staying at Embassy suites at I-29 and tiffany springs parkway. Is this a safe area? I was told the smokehouse barbecue cafe is good.Is this true? How far are the other barbecues located to this exit? I'll be in kansas city july 28.My G-19 will go along on the trip. Thanks for the info!

I’m guessing that you are up near the airport. If so, you are going to be quite a distance from the city center and nothing worthwhile is going to be particularly close to you, but almost all of the places listed below are pretty easy to find. You are in a safe neighborhood and none of the restaurants listed below are in “bad” neighborhoods compared to larger cities. I wouldn’t want to hang out around Bryant’s at night, but for lunch it should be fine.

Ask the front desk how to get to any of these restaurants and they should be able to help you – or go on the websites listed below and do mapquest directions.

Also, not sure about the G-19. CCW is prohibited in Kansas and I’m not sure what the rules are like in Missouri. You’ll be crossing in and out of Kansas if you go anywhere, so beware.

I'll go with Bryant's as my favorite--for both meat and sauce.

Gates has great sauce, but the meat quality is a little spotty. Haywards used to be pretty good and very convenient for lunch, but I've heard fewer good things lately.

I don't like LC's sauce, and the meat wasn't very good and Jack Stack struck me as a little bland and commercialized.

Safe as in "there's not a damned thing there." You will be reasonably close to Excelsior Springs, where one of the best picks on that website was, but far away from downtown and Johnson Co., KS where the JackStack is located (95th & Metcalf - there's another on Holmes in Martin City, 135th st., I believe).

At least 10 miles to Stroud's Oak Ridge Manor, likely more. Tiffany Springs is right up by the airport on I-29, whereas Stroud's is pretty close to NKC on I-35.

I, personally, like Stroud's better than BBQ.

FWIW, Arthur Bryant's was shown on the Travel Channel last night on "BBQ Bastions" special that will likely be re-broadcast. My personal opinion of Bryant's is only order the brisket and fries and slap the meat on white bread with pickles and sauce, as his ribs never did it for me.
