One dead, two wounded in Chisholm (MN) bar shooting

A shooting at a Chisholm bar Saturday night left one person dead and two others wounded, according to Chisholm Police and the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

A 48-year-old suspect confronted his ex-wife inside Jim's Sports Club Bar & Grill, 101 W. Lake Street," the agencies said in a statement.

"When a bar patron intervened, investigators say the suspect left the bar and returned a short time later with a gun. He allegedly shot three people before being subdued by another bar patron. The suspect was injured during the incident. His injuries are believed to be non life-threatening."

One surviving shooting victim and the suspect were taken to Fairview University Medical Center in Hibbing, the statement said. The other shooting victim was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

Authorities said they will update the ongoing investigation during a news conference this afternoon.

But isn't it illegal to have a gun in a bar in MN?

So how could he possibly have shot people inside the bar?

More than likely there was no sign at the front door so this poor man probably did not know he was not allowed to go in there and shoot 3 people.
He was trying to change his life and go to school.
He was a good guy I am sure:upeyes:

We actually have better gun laws than most other states, at least until the point you actually shoot someone.

The folks who authored the language in our carry law are very very smart.

    Ok, then.
    How about:

Isn't it illegal to shoot people in MN?
I mean, if it's illegal, no one would do it, right?

I actually went to that bar about 10 years ago...ugliest women in Minnesota! I can still remember walking in vividly...I felt like I was in The Hills Have Eyes!

    P.S.
I'm sure that that evening was purely an exception, and that the town of Chisholm has many attractive residents...:whistling:

    Nope.

But you have to be within the law when you do so.

Goofy way the paper put that.

It's the MN BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension).

Easiest way to describe them is to consider them the state's (MN's) version of the FBI (FBI is federal, MN BCA is state and only state).

The BCA focuses heavily in training and investigations (crime scene/crime lab stuff/homicide). With large agencies the BCA might assist (level/amount depends on size/capability of agency) with a homicide investigation, and is smaller agencies they will take a much larger role.

Some other states have a BCA agency too.

Chisholm police officer is suspect in shooting

    Duluth News Tribune
A 47-year-old former Chisholm police officer was under police supervision Sunday in a Hibbing hospital. He is suspected of shooting and killing one man Saturday night and wounding two others, one of whom is fighting for his life.
State and county authorities said that Jason Musburger is facing potential charges of homicide and attempted homicide in connection with the shooting at Jim’s Sports Club Bar & Grill, 108 W. Lake St., in Chisholm about 9:45 p.m. Saturday.
Edward John Walberg, 40, was shot and killed. Steve Nelson, 29, was shot twice in the stomach and is “fighting for his life” in a Duluth hospital, said Andy Skoogman, director of communications for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Larry Elj, 38, was shot near the shoulder. His injury is not life-threatening.
Investigators believe that Musburger confronted his ex-wife inside the bar. When Nelson intervened, the suspect left the bar and returned a short time later with a gun. He allegedly shot the three men before being subdued by a bar patron. The assailant was reportedly injured when he was hit over the head with a chair or stool to end the attack.
According to court records, Musburger and his ex-wife, Janice, were divorced on April 16.

I understand sir. Just like OK has the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).

Just making a funny based on the name. Bureau of Apprehension just sounded a little simplistic, sort of a "hey, we catch 'em".

    But thanks for the info.

Looks like he was a Cop there a long time back for a couple of years.

It doesn't say why he left or under what grounds (other than he left on "good terms" as in it was his choice to leave at the time he did, wasn't fired. Don't know if there was any "behind the scene" stuff).

That makes it sound like he had been a city water dept employee who tried his hand at Police work for the city, and went back to the water dept.

Another update. I wonder why the shooter hasn't been charged.

CHISHOLM, Minn. (AP) -- The man who stopped a bar shooting incident by smashing the suspected gunman over the head with a chair is being hailed as a hero by the mayor of the northeastern Minnesota town of Chisholm.
The Saturday night shootings left one man dead, another critically wounded and a third less seriously hurt. Authorities say the suspect had gone to the bar to confront his ex-wife, who was sitting at the victims' table.
Mayor Michael Jugovich says Ryan Simonson is a hero who probably saved lives, since the suspect had a second gun.
The 27-year-old Simonson says the incident seems surreal, and he's not sure what made him attack the gunman, but he knew his friends were in trouble.
The suspect, who was a Chisholm police officer in the 1980s, has not been charged.

It is simple economics, the shooter is in the hospital.
