Help me pick out a commander. I'm guessing all of them are pretty much on par in the semi-custom world, but is there any that you would NOT recommend? I'm kinda leaning toward a LB TRS Comanche or SRP Comanche with naked slide and hardchrome. I like the Brown and NN too....and probably more once i start looking into it, lol. What do you think?

Here's another question....Ive read that a carbon steel gun gives the tightest fit; if you get that same gun hardchromed, wouldn't that make the fit less "fitted", or is the work done after the coating is in place? Does it really matter?

SRP Comanche with naked slide and hardchrome
This is what I'd go with.

Of course Bac made a seemingly excellent suggestion of a Guncrafter No Name.
I'd skip the Commanche since by design it is not supposed to slingshot. The other reason is because its a Baer. :tongueout:
Les Baer gets my vote! I own a commanche and will get another!

No doubt you would love one of Guncrafter's models, MD.

I only have experience with the NN, but I'm sure the others are outstanding as well.
I'd get the NN or an unbobtailed Brown KC or EC if you want something different.

I'd go this route. I've had a Baer Premier II for 8 years, and it is the most accurate and reliable 1911 I've ever owned. I kept thinking that the only way to make it more useful to me is to switch to fixed sights and a more streamlined thumb safety, and maybe chrome it. Instead of messing with it, I bought a hard chrome 5" TRS. I'm just as happy with it as I am with the Premier II.

I had a Comanche sized Baer Concept VII for a few years. I sold it because I have a strong preference for full sized 1911's, but that compact Baer shot great and was 100% reliable. I can highly recommend it.
I'd skip the Commanche since by design it is not supposed to slingshot.
That would be the dealbreaker for me. I am a slingshot guy....If it won't slingshot, it will not find a place in my safe.......EVER!!

I think either the SRP or the NN (from what I've read - never touch one) would be a great choice. For me, the best of that class of Commander is the Kobra Carry - they just define Ed Brown and the Commander class for me. I've also had fantastic shooting results with Wilson's 4" Bull barreled Compacts too. How's that for no-help-deciding-whatsoever?
when i was looking for a Commander sized gun the shop had a Wilson Professional bobtail, Kobra Carry and a Commanche. I was fondling all 3 of them. I ruled out the Wilson because it was $400 more than the Brown and the Professional (the example i handled) wasn't as nice (IMO) for the extra $400. I preferred the GenIII coating over the 2-tone Armor Tuff.

The Baer was ruled out because i wanted a bobtail, and with the magic of a smart-phone, i found that the Commanche may not sling-shot. The Baer's trigger was the worst of the 3 and i didn't care for the finish. It was the least expensive of the bunch though.

I bought the Kobra Carry, for a few reasons.
1. I always wanted one since i first saw them.
2. It was the original bobtail.
3. I wanted a black gun, and the GenIII was to my liking.
4. Best trigger of the 3.
5. Felt like it was put together nicely.
Its funny to see the slingshot thing coming up all the time. When I bought my Commanche I read every single page on another forum where people discuss the subject. What I found was that yes, it does no slingshot BUT it is extremelly reliable, build is outstanding, and it does look and feel like an all business 1911 (nothing against the cute EBs, they are fine guns). I never, never, slingshot so I went ahead and ordered one - the best commander 1911 I ever had (out of two Colts and two DW CBOBs). My Commanche has 750 rounds, about 75 HPs, and it has never failed. I don't even notice the gun slingshots or not, I don't use it that way.
just depends on how one trains. i don't use the slide stop as a slide release.
Same here.....that is why a non-slingshoting 1911 (or any pistol for that matter) is a no-go for me.

I've read they don't slingshot, but ive also read that is an easy fix:dunno:. If it doesnt slingshot, that might be the deal breaker. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.

May i ask why you hate Baers so much? Everyone is always joking about you and LB's, but why do you hate them so much? Is it because of what you said in that other post about the crappy finish and trigger?

Ahhh jeez, those guns look SO good. Is that one on the bottom HC? The clean lines and classic style of the NN is EXACTLY what i like. How long has that gun been around? It seems like its newer/less known than LB or EB?

A few months ago the Kobra Carry was #1 on the list, but ive started to like the traditional serations instead of the snakeskin.....that and it seems that everyone has a KC. I want something a little different, even though i agree the gun is incredible. Maybe i just need to win the lotto so i can buy one of everything.
