Headed up to Unicoi State Park to hike the 3 mile trail to Helen. The dogs and I planned to eat at Hans (Brautwurst & Beer) and then hike the 3 miles back over the mountain again to get back to the car.

I did this hike just one direction when I was 19 and was worn out at the end. Now I'm out of shape and 40lbs heavier.

    -------
Well the first thing I did was pack up my bag with one nights worth of supplies...Just incase I either decided to stay in Helen or had to camp out in the woods. I packed all the usual stuff including power bars emergency blanket, matches, flashlight, toilet paper, water etc. Nothing heavy though.

I also typed up a route plan and left it at the front desk of the visitor center and got their phone number to let them know if I decided to stay in Helen.

As soon as the girls saw my backpack, they went bonkers. Since it was a long drive and Bella is getting old, I tossed her favorite dog bed in the back of the Honda. I loaded up my supplies and the girls and hit the road. Bella was all smiles.

    Indy trying to look dignified.

Here's Toosies old lot. Many a good ride started there back in the day.

Before long we wandered into Helen.

The trial started off very easy and was well marked. I was impressed with how well kept it was. No big roots or ruts to trip up on.

I had only been walking for 10 minutes when I noticed my lower back was getting damp. I took off my backpack and took a peek. Everything was soaked. The bottom peice that connects the water bladder and the tube was split. Sadly, I had no choice but to empty it out. I still had two bottles that I brought along for the dogs.

    Well crap.

I put the empty bladder back in the pack and carried on.

Right about here the water that was collected by the blanket stated dripping down my crack and eventually made it's way to my nether region.

When I got to this meadow about 15 minutes in I stopped to evaluate my situation. Two bottles of water, big gut, poo stew forming in my undies and soggy balls. It was going to be a great day.

It wasn't long before we made it to the creek/river. There were a few guys here and there fly fishing. It looked so peaceful. I'll have to add fly fishing to my bucket list.

Since we were low on water, I let the girls have a dip and a drink.

The trail followed the creek for a while and the sound was really soothing.

Once the creek turned off in a different direction the climbing began...and it went on forever. My legs were on fire.

    My loyal hiking puppy, Indy.

We stopped at a crossing for the bicycle trail and were promptlty pounced on by a cougar. She was about 40, tight walking pants, fake blonde hair, etc. She "oo'd and ah'd" at the dogs and stoof uncomfortable close to me while conversing. After about a 5 minute break we said our goodbyes and went in different directions. I was looking forward to the brautwust and she was looking forward to preying on some unsuspecting 21 year old somewhere, sometime.

The trail stayed smooth and even and started back downhill for a ways.

Couple of steep dropoffs and some switchbacks.

Finally! We made it! Now off to Hans for lunch!

    Well poo....

Since Hans was a no-go, we decided to walk through town to see if any of the other restaurants were dog friendly. On the way we were passed by a horse-drawn carriage with this guy riding shotgun.

The girls on the outskirts of town.

We walked all the way the Cafe International and they were very welcoming to both me and the dogs.

When the nice lady brought out my glass of water, she was kind enough to bring the girls a bucket of water. I didn't even have to ask. I was very impressed with the service.

The pups drank their fill and promptly went to sleep... haha

I started off with an awesome salad.

And then moved onto a wicked plate of Brautwurst, sauerkrawt, red cabbage, german potato salad, and a delicious German Wheat Beer.

After chilling out for 30 minutes or so we walked back towards downtown and had to take a break. We had only walked an 8th of a mile. I waaaay over did it on lunch. We sat down on a bench and suddenly found ourselves surrounded by children. A family on vacation from FL were walking by and the kids wanted to see the dogs.
You can see them in the background of this pic.

After our break, we trudged on. It was uphill for the first mile or so. Once we hit the trail we passed a waterfall I missed on the first pass.

The pace slowed as we crept on and on uphill. My wet undies were really taking a toll on my inner thighs. I was releaved when we passed the bike trail where we met the cougar because we crossed to the other side of the mountain and started going down hill.

I decided to take a break at one of the u-turns and shared a bottle of water with the girls.

This is the turn where we stopped. Thankfully we were heading down hill.

    The girls gulping it down.

I didn't take many pictures on the way back since there was nothing new to see, but here's the meadow from the other side.

Nothing exciting or new happened on the way back to the lodge so the camera stayed in my pocket. When we got back, I checked in with the ranger at the lodge to let him know I was back and heading home and we took off.

Once we got back to the car, Indy tried to stay awake and be sociable.

She lasted about 5 minutes. hahaha

great pics and looks like a fun hike, girls look like they enjoyed the heck out of it too.

Way to much to-do for a 6 mile hike at just over sea level IMO though!

You are lucky to have such beautiful GSDs. Unfortunately, I am at a place in my life which I am unable to have a dog. That will be changing come June 1st and I plan on getting two GSD puppies or possibly two from a GSD rescue.
