Whether the badge comes to fruition or not (because of the current buzz of asymmetric warfare), thoughts to a Senator after SecDef opened his mouth at OCONUS town hall & inserted foot... Dear Senator Feingold, I would appreciate it if your staff could pass this information to Sen. Kohl's and Rep. Kind's offices, as their contact method (non-email) doesn't let me attach the references. The first link below is the transcript of a recent SecDef "town hall" conducted overseas. Between his dissembling and passing the Soldier's question about the CCB off to LTG Barno (who parroted a terrible "party line" about the criteria) Secretary Rumsfeld has managed, again, to thoroughly tick me off. The second link is from a web log ('blog') run by a former active-duty Army MP officer (still currently in IRR status) who comments on military affairs. An accurate assessment. http://www.dod.mil/transcripts/2005/tr20050414-secdef2521.html http://www.intel-dump.com/archives/archive_2005_04_10-2005_04_16.shtml#1113580478 The recent contact report of the ambush and vicious firefight in which a platoon of the 617th MP (Kentucky Nat'l Guard) prevailed in an attempt by insurgents to destroy a convoy and take hostages/prisoners is relevant here. The MP unit which saved the day was trained up, validated, and deployed out of Fort McCoy, WI. Several of the MP's who distinguished themselves with valorous conduct happen to be female MP's by the way. (The UNCLAS contact report I have from their Brigade S2 is available from me if your office needs it - it's inspiring reading & I was honored to meet some of these folks before they deployed. Aimed headshots on bad guys, by the female MP's as well, are one indicator of cool under fire.) Alas, Secretary Rumsfeld doesn't think these folks worthy of a CCB. My point is that the CCB needs to be about those who actually ENGAGE in close combat, rather than another arbitrary distinction based on MOS. To do otherwise rewards rear-echelon types in those new units who "qualify" while drinking bottled water in the TOC, totally insulting those who are at the tip of the spear, ordinary people, performing in an extraordinary fashion. I sincerely hope that you and the rest of your Congressional colleagues will call Secretary Rumsfeld to task and insist that DoD and DA do the right thing regarding the criteria of the CCB. Respectfully, ;?
