When you see the WWB hollow point doing the same “damage” as the stuff I’ve been carrying, makes you wonder…
This man has been in a self defense shooting (more than the vast majority of us can say) and I respect his opinion. Also worth noting that he does not have sponsors, which in my mind makes his opinion MUCH more credible. No sponsors means no reason to shill for any certain company, or make you think you need to spend money you don’t.
He has some other videos on this subject too.

380 - Hydra Shok deep
9mm - 124/147 HST, Golden Saber or Ranger T 127+P+ in a pinch.
40 - 180 HST, Hydra Shok, Winchester white box
45 - 230 HST
357 Sig - HST, Ranger, Gold Dot
10mm - Hornady 155/180 XTP and my handloads*
Those are my choices based on various tests I've seen, or did myself for 10mm handloads.

I’m HST and Hornady too. Interesting to think about though!

I like Paul. Some people don't, and will be vocal about it.

I'm not worried about using the best, or anything new.

Golden sabre for 45. Hornady for 9 and 380. Buffalo bore 165 for 10mm. I'm a big fan of old tech so jacketed soft point for 357 magnum. All of those are proven to work in the platforms that I use. Been trying out the sig defensive ammo but haven't made the switch yet. Some very good early preliminary findings so far. I'll give that one another five years.

I like watching his videos, but I don't always agree with him. When it comes to ammo selection, I want the same barrier blindness that the police want, and the meat target doesn't take barriers into account. So, I'll stick with the bonded stuff like Gold Dots in duty calibers and hard cast and mono-metal XD/XP in .380.

Barrier blindness and reliability. He makes some good points but WWB is not as reliable as an HST. That’s one reason I don’t think I could make the switch.
And I mean reliability in regards to load quality, sealed primers etc.

Never fired the WWB JHP, but the only "name brand" 9mm ammo I have ever had significant failure to fire was WWB FMJ. Done it to me about a half dozen times over the last few years. For me, if it is WWB of any flavor, I put it into the range only category. For carry I use either Hornady Critical Duty or Speer Gold Dot.

I always use stuff thats good, engineered for CC/HD/SD what ever you are using it for.. and I like to know im getting something thats been put through some testing and development to be sure it expands and works like it should. The newer ways over the past probably 10-15 years some even more recent as in 10 years or less ways they get certain bullets bonded or to expand at different speeds/velocity and out of shorter CC guns.

Thats why the more modern ones actually work and why now days 9mm is considered good for CC/HD because they actually expand unlike some of the older ones from the past didnt especially from todays shorter barreled CC guns.. So no im not wasting $$. I do sometimes buy some of the bulk boxes9100) of the JHP hollowpoints in Remington normally.. just to have a couple hundred HP on hand .... but I dont run them in my CC/HD OVER say Gold Dots,Critical Duty, or Golden Sabres for instance..they are more on hand for the...emergency purposes rather than going into them for regular carry.

and todays .380 ammo I wont carry the over penetrating FMJ's(i used to as in the old days of the Colt Mustang II thats all it would reliably feed) now days the best of the .380 SD ammo woks well and better(expansion) than FMJ (other than the Honey badger that doesnt expand)

I tend to agree. I try to save money on practice ammo sure, but a few bucks a box does seem worth it when your life could depend on it.

Paul uses a lot of Remington green and yellow box. From what I’ve seen from his episodes, it usually performs better than what I read from internet experts. I believe the video is one he talks about the light projectiles not hitting constantly, because they’re outside of the rifling intended weight perimeters.

You don’t think that police penny pinchers would go to cheap bulk ammo if it were actually “just as good” as premium stuff? They’d switch and divert the savings to a pet project so fast that it would make heads spin.

Paul missed the boat on this one. Performance after going through winter clothes matters. Performance after going through auto glass matters. Sealed primer pockets, tight crimping…matter. All this stuff costs money, and the little bit more you pay for a bonded bullet that doesn’t get plinked away is more than worth it.

Are we wasting our money on “premium” defense ammo?

I certainly hope so.
I would love to never have to use any of it. Thats the kind of wasted money I would be thrilled with.
But prepare for the worst and pray for the best.
