What are your thoughts about the use of antidepressants. Are they a necessary medication like Insulin is to a diabetic, or should people just buck-up and deal with their "emotional" problems?

Some statistics about antidepressant drug use:

    - Antidepressants are the most prescribed drug in America.
    - The use of antidepressants doubled since the last decade.
    - 1 in 10 women take antidepressants.
    - Women twice as likely to take antidepressants than men.
    - 27 million Americans use antidepressants
    - Most users are White.
    - The unemployed are most likely to use antidepressants than the employed.
    - Utah has the largest number of antidepressant users, NYC is next.

They are good for curing depression. After the patient commits suicide, they are no longer depressed...

They lead to weight gain (sometimes a lot), and arent as much of a cure-all as the tv commercials would have you believe.

    Yes and no.

Some people are depressed because of their life situation. Taking anti-depressants short term and talking to a therapist is a legitimate way to help them. Meds may not be necessary depending on the person.

Some people are depressed because their brain is simply wired that way in which case anti-depressants can completely change their life.

Its hard for me to make a decision on this, as I can only know my mind and how I feel.

I do believe each person goes through cycles, sometimes up and sometimes down. I also believe that every person can control their mood, regardless what point in the cycle they're at.

Whether or not some people really NEED these medications is debateable, more often than not I'm afraid individuals use it as a crutch and become dependent on them. Hard to overlook the placebo effect, too.

diet and exercise can do far more for depression than most realize. I do think they are necessary for some, but for most i think they are just a band-aid.

Some are also used to treat people with anxiety.

Like anything in life and particularly medicine, anti-depressants have a valid and valuable use for some people. They can also be over-prescribed and over used.

In some cases yes, in some cases no. In some cases a Chemical imbalance can easily be fixed and the person in question will be able to live a happier healthier life. In other cases the doctors are too quick to pull the trigger and an unhealthy dependancy on a drug can occur when perhaps just some counseling and education would do the trick.

Maybe I'm just a little cold hearted and ignorant of the situation, and know I'll get flamed for it, but if somebody needs antidepressant drugs, it means that some doctor has certified them crazy (as in NOT normal. The should have their driving license revoked (they're on drugs....right?:dunno:) and also have their firearms impounded until certified by at least 3 independant doctors that they are back to normal.
People moping around "depressed" all the time. Just suck it up, change your life, whatever it takes to keep moving without drugs! Everybody has problems, but now it seems like that people think that problems give them some medical condition that can be cured by pills.
I prefer to look at the humorous side of things if I'm having a bad day, look at my blessings and always realize that things could always be worse. That philosophy (and a couple quarts of beer:supergrin:) usually bring me in if I get the blues.

I'm sure there are cases where they help.. However, now days if someone has a bad day at work, gets out of a relationship, or stumps their toe, they think they're depressed and start "asking their doctor if ____________ is right for them"...

So sure, I guess they could help. Problem is, most people taking them don't need them.

Yes...yes...they wouldn't perscribe drugs for a mental condition that doesn't exist.....right? So the person isn't "normal".

So, practice what you preach. You are medicating your "blues" with alcohol. Surrender all of your weapons and drivers license immediately.
