How much is a fortune? Whats your budget? Have you learned what your personal "deal breakers" are yet?

I'd say $700 will get you a decent AR15. If you dont have at least $700...i'd just sit and save and do alot of AR15 homework. Here on the Ar15 subforum, M4carbine, and AR15.com. Oh yeah and youtube has alot of good helpful videos now. Youtube is kind of like the new forums.

I have to admit that Palmetto deal is freakin amazing for those who care about features more than roll marks.

That is a great deal on that M4 from Palmetto. I have an Aimpoint PRO and I think it is the best red dot on the market for the money. If you aren't looking to drop a grand on one right away I think double star makes a nice AR for the money. Stag, and some of the DPMS's models such as the Oracle and the Sportical (Check the barrels on those to make sure they are chrome lined)are good guns for the money. Stay away from the lower priced guns like the Bushmaster carbon 15 as well as any other AR that doesn't have a chrome lined Barrel. The bottom has fallen out of the AR market as much as I think it is going to, since the panic awhile back and this is definately the time to buy one!

Id say any of the mid tier guns and up would be a decent rifle.

Bushmaster, Stag, S&W, Palmetto, etc would all make a quality rifle, that wouldn't cost you an arm and a leg.

If you want a little nicer rifle, BCM, ADCO, Noveske, LMT, Colt, LWRC, etc all make guns of a little higher quality, but they also cost a little, to significantly more.

I want a AR 15 in .223 but don't want to spend a fortune. So how much do I need to spend to get a decent SHTF AR and what brands should I stay away from?
Go with your username's brand. The M&P15 is a great gun at a good value.

I bought a S&W MP15T about 4 years ago, it was around $950 (maybe that was LE price?) It's served me well.

S&W came out with the sporter model which can be found for around $650ish.

I am currently going to build my next rifle and will be starting with parts from Palmetto State Armorer. I'm getting everything from them except the stripped lower. I'm looking at around $650ish as well for building my own.

For a good low-budget, good quality build, I would go with Del-Ton or Palmetto State Armory. You could even build a DS Arms M4 for around $700-$750.
