What firearm mechanism do you find superior, the AR or the AK and why is this your choice for an assault rifle?

Both have advantages and disadvantages, though currently I don't think the Kalashnikov has any advantage over the AR when it comes to reliability.

With AR prices dropping and AK prices continuing to go up I don't see any reason to buy an AK an AR except that they are cool pieces of history and a fun design to run.

My AK is fun to shoot, but if I was in trouble big enough for a rifle I would grab my Rock River A4 first choice.

One is definitely not "better" than the other.

Lucky for us we live in America and have choices. I think both are worth owning and luckily I don't have to pick between the two.

Warfare, reliability and I'm talking about the "real" AK's, not the knockoffs.

Oh. No first hand experience there, thankfully. Although my Saiga is made in the Russian factory, so is pretty real :)

And my Rock River is not exactly the same as the military use, but is more accurate :)

I'll take my ARs over any AK any day.

I tried the AK. If you are under 6' and don't care about ergonomics or accuracy, they might be perfect for you.

I will compare my Arsenal AK vs my S&W MOE AR on what I like better .

AK : I like the trigger better , it has a much smoother and lighter trigger pull than my AR ( but that can be made much better than the AK for about $230 dollars and I will do that soon ) .

I like the 7.62 caliber better than the 5.56 , I could hunt large game in Va. with my AK not my AR .

I like the proven reliability track record of the AK ( not that I have had any reliability problems with my AR ) .

I like the low cost of ammo for the AK .

AR : I like the accuracy of the AR over the AK ( and my AK is milled ) .

I like the easy customization of the AR over the AK .

Most AR's will adjust to fit anyone with the adjustable stock ( my AK fits me though ) .

I like the low cost of extra magazines .

I have a few of both and enjoy them both.

The AK is pretty simplistic but that doesn't mean they don't fail. The milspec AK trigger is prone to fail but easy and cheap to upgrade. My opinion of the AK accuracy is probably the same as most people in that it's no tac driver but is still reasonably accurate. The extra inch on a NATO length stock vs Warsaw made a big difference for me as far as ergonomics. Adding optics to an AK seems have been an afterthought. A couple of the current mount options are pretty good though (RS Regulate via side mount, Ultimak gas tube).

One of the AR issues people often debate is the gas system. The operating system dumps dirty gas back into the chamber and can eventually foul it enough to stop operation. I don't know how many rounds it would take between cleaning to do that but it must be a lot. Certainly more than I've ever fired but I'm not/wasn't a soldier. Adding optics, lights etc to an AR is easy. Very comfortable to shoot.

If you're talking about "real AK's" then shouldn't the comparison be AK47/74 to M4/M16 instead of AR15?

If I had to arm a group of people that wouldn't get much training and maybe also not much support other than ammo, then the AK would be a better choice. I think the AR is a better platform for a well supported group. Neither matters if you're just a plinker like me. My AK's get more range time because I think they're more fun to shoot. Not sure why.

That's the first time I've ever seen anyone like the stock AK trigger over a stock AR trigger. My Russian and Bulgarian Arsenals and my Wasr triggers were long gravel roads before i replace them with Texas triggers and a Geissele AKT ($60).

Very nice AR triggers can be purchased for far less than $230 as well.

I am comparing my two guns not the whole as I said .
Not the trigger I want .

That's the beauty we can have what we want and what we are willing to pay .

    It ain't 1950s any more.

SCAR16 or SCAR17 beat them both.

My AK clone (WASR-3 5.56x45 NATO) is as accurate as my cousin's M4 built. Mine has considerably lot less parts and is piston driven. The tolerances make it very reliable under any condition, and with the right magazines(wieger) is flawless even with the cheapest steel case Monarch or Tula ammo. My cousing can't say the same. Don't get me wrong, I really would like to have an AR build, but I just can't find any advantage over mine. Needless to say, I'm now on the market for a VERP MOLOT chambered in NATO 308 with a 16" heavy barrel.:cowboy:

No, but I can still give him better options than the two dinosaurs he's asking about.
