UPDATE 9 p.m.: AP says eight killed in Appomattox shooting
UPDATE 9 p.m.: APPOMATTOX — An Associated Press source says eight people were killed in the shootings.

EARLIER APPOMATTOX—Multiple people were killed in an Appomattox County shooting Tuesday afternoon that sparked a manhunt involving more than 150 police officers from throughout the region, and damaged a state police helicopter.

Sgt. Thomas Molnar with Virginia State Police said during a 7 p.m. news conference that law enforcement had a suspect cornered in a small wooded area behind a home off Snapps Mill Road between Concord and the Town of Appomattox, north of U.S. 460. As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, the suspect had not been apprehended and is considered armed and dangerous.

State Police released few other details on the situation. They would not say how many people had died, identify the suspect or any of the deceased.

Around noon Tuesday, Appomattox County emergency dispatchers received a call about a man lying in Snapps Mill Road and needing medical attention. When police arrived, they heard more gunshots, which sparked calls for assistance from neighboring counties.

Around 1:30 p.m., shots were fired at a Virginia State Police helicopter, striking it four times, including at least once in a fuel line. The helicopter was forced to land because of a fuel leak. There were no injuries.

Centra Health spokesperson Susan Brandt said a man with multiple gunshot wounds from the reported shooting in Appomattox County was flown to Lynchburg General Hospital by MedFlight around 1:30 p.m. He had surgery and was transferred to the neurological intensive care unit, where he later died from complications of multiple gunshot wounds. Brandt could not release his identification because next of kin had not been notified.

Brandt said the hospital was told of only one patient coming in with injuries.

The State Police’s Appomattox district headquarters are within a couple of miles of Snapps Mill Road, where deputies and state police surrounded a small white farmhouse on the narrow two-lane road. Neighbors say the house is home to a family of four.

Resident Bethel Hawkins told The Associated Press that police warned families to remain inside with their doors locked. She said many homeowners in the area are senior citizens.

“We’re just being cautious, keeping our doors locked, not going outside,‘’ said Hawkins, who lives about two miles up the road from the shootings. “Our church service is supposed to be tonight, but we talked with our pastor and told him we’re not coming out. We’re not going out in the dark not knowing what’s out there. But we trust in the Lord to take care of us.”

A nearby private school went on lockdown around 12:30 p.m., but students were released to their parents under police supervision around 3 p.m., said Cornerstone Christian Academy Administrative Assistant Teri Houts.

Two families have been evacuated from the area, where access has been blocked. Deputies from sheriff’s offices in Appomattox, Prince Edward, Campbell and Charlotte counties are on the scene, as well as officers from the Farmville police department and the Virginia State Police, including tactical and K-9 units.

Appomattox County officials offered to open an emergency shelter for the displaced families, but county administrator Aileen Ferguson said those services were not needed.

Del. Watkins Abbitt, I-Appomattox, got word of the unfolding events during the General Assembly session on Tuesday. “It’s a tragedy and it will have a great impact on our county,” he said. “We’ve never had anything like this before.”

The worst homicide he could recall in Appomattox County involved four deaths in a case about 30 years ago, he said.

Members of the Appomattox Board of Supervisors observed a moment of silence for the victims during their meeting Tuesday evening, where they received an update from Ferguson.

“We come to you with heavy hearts with what’s going on in our county tonight. I pray dear God for the families and all the ones involved,“ Supervisor Jerry Smith said during the meeting’s invocation.

Referring to the public safety officers involved Tuesday night, Ferguson said, “There is certainly cause for us to continue to pray for their safety.”

In a news release, State Police say investigators are also trying to locate two vehicles that belong to Speight.

One is a tan 1997 Ford Escort LX car.

The second vehicle is a green 1996 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Hope it works out soon, and let's get those brave men and women home safely. May the perp step on a rusty bear trap and slowly dies of starvation, but not before the bear comes around and slaps him one silly... while taking off half his scalp and face with the massive bear claw.

The alleged gunman who shot and killed eight people in a rural Virginia county is in police custody, state authorities announced Wednesday.

Christopher Speight, 39, surrendered to authorities at approximately 7:10 a.m. Wednesday, Sheriff O. Wilson Staples told reporters.

Police say Speight fatally shot eight people at a home in Appomattox County, Va., on Tuesday and forced down a police helicopter after shooting its fuel tank.

Police found three bodies inside the home and four other victims outside. Another man found injured along a nearby roadway later died.

Staples said bomb technicians and police canines are scouring the crime scene Wednesday to ensure there are no explosives on the premises.

"There is a probability such devices do exist," Staples said, adding that Speight lived at the home where the murders took place.

State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said Speight was "acquainted" with the victims, but did not release their names or the suspect's possible relationship to them.

"The next step is to confirm the identity of the victims," she said.

Speight, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest when he surrendered to authorities, was transported to Appomattox County Jail, Geller added.

Investigators used dogs and heat-sensing equipment to search overnight for Speight in a wooded area in Appomattox County, about 100 miles southwest of Richmond.

Local officials agreed to close four schools that serve about 2,000 students as a precaution.

Geller called Tuesday's massacre "one of the worst mass killings" in the state since 2007 — when 32 people were killed during a shooting rampage on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

The drama unfolded around noon on Tuesday when a victim was spotted barely alive along the side of a narrow, undivided country road.

A deputy who answered the emergency call heard more gunshots and soon the area just about 3 miles from the state police district headquarters was filled with law enforcement from nearby municipalities, with more than 100 responding. The injured man died on the way to the hospital, said state police Sgt. Thomas Molnar.

Earlier, as teams tried to catch the gunman, he fired at the helicopter trying to flush him out, police said. One or more rounds struck the helicopter, forcing it down, but no police were injured.

Police refused to speculate on a motive. Molnar gave no background on the suspect, saying not much was known about him.

Speight was not listed as an offender on the Virginia Department of Corrections Web site and a search for his name on the Appomattox County courts site came up with no matches.

Appomattox is in a county of about 15,000 residents, best known as the place where Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to end the Civil War.

Terrible. Damned shame he couldn't just off himself instead of mowing down a bunch of people then surrendering.

Too bad he was taken alive. Now we have to waste time and money on him. Either I am uncaring anymore, or these pain meds are making me pissy. Either way, damn shame he gets out alive after murdering eight people. Does VA have a death penalty, and a state government with the balls to do it?

VA is second only to TX in terms of the death penalty. Just a shame we have to wait 10 years.

    Why the 10 year wait?

Somebody can go down to the hardware store, buy 15 feet of rope, and get the job done by lunch time the next day. Sometimes, they got things right in the old days. Not too many repeat offenders for serious crimes after being caught.
