My wife and I are going to Vegas soon and we are interested in taking a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon. Do any of you folks have any recommendations for or against any of the tour companies? I've been told that there are alot of companies that offer these tours from LV and that some of them are to be avoided. All help is appreciated and if anyone prefers they can send their input by PM.
    Thanks.

    I've done it several times.

Here's what you get with Papillon Helicopter Tours:

Inadequate maintenance and pilot error by employees of Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters caused separate crashes that injured eight people and destroyed two canyon-touring aircraft, federal investigators determined.

The National Transportation Safety Board's rulings on a crash two years ago near Hoover Dam and another accident five months ago in the canyon are two more serious blows to Papillon, the Las Vegas-based company that last year was involved in the deadliest canyon crash since 1995.

"We've had a run of bad luck here," said Papillon Vice President Rick Carrick, referring to the air tour company's string of three high-profile crashes in three years. "No one deserves it less. We're a respectable company."

The NTSB has not yet ruled on a probable cause of the Aug. 10, 2001, crash that killed six people and left sole survivor Chana Daskal with severe burns over most of her body.

"A run of bad luck"?? Nice to trivialize the seriousness of those crashes.
I flew with Maverick Helicopter Tours the last couple of times.

I do recommend the Mav group. Flying is dangerous and so is driving and a host of other activities. I enjoyed the tour and saw a lot in a short time and did not have to drive. And I would do it again.

No, but I've hiked the whole thing, top to bottom & back up. Pretty cool.

Cool. A couple questions for you, if you will.

    How long did it take?

How much water did you pack?

How far in advance did you apply for your permit?

    Thank you. :notworthy:

I chose Maverick and enjoyed the tour. The champagne thing was kind of cheesy but part of the deal.

This will not make you feel better but it is funny and kind of puts things in prospective.

Back in the 1980's, early one morning I was refueling my helicopter for a 100 mile trip out into the Gulf of Mexico.
The passengers were loading on the helicopter.
One passenger came up to me and said, "I don't like this s***.
    I said, "What s*** don't you like?"
He said, "I don't like this flying s***. it scares me".
I said, "Don't worry about it. I've got 10,000 pilot hours and this flying s*** scares me to".

He got back in his car and left.

It took my friend & I somewhere around 9 hours to hike down & 12 to come back up. We packed two full canteens each, plus an extra gallon & lots of fruits & snacks.. It was late March & I remember it was snowing on the South rim when we started down at sun-up.

We also packed a tent & our USMC issued sleeping bags and camped beside the river about 100yds from Phantom Ranch.

It took a few months to get our permits if I remember correct.

I had blisters the size of quarters after our trek, but I wouldn't trade that experience. It was truly beautiful.

    In all my tie-dyed glory:

    JUST DO IT!!

My wife and I did this some years ago (sorry don't remember the company name) but we flew right out of the park area down into the canyon below the rim. I read some time back that there were more and more complaints about noise when flying below the rim so I don't know whether or not any of the companies still do this but take that ride if its still available. You will not regret the expense. And bring a good camera!!

I fly a Gulfstream out of Las Vegas. The place is like Vietnam... all the helicopter traffic. The most diciplined helicopter pilots I see are the Mavrick guys. Take the tour. It's worth it.

Haven't done an actual tour, but we took helicopters to the bottom of the canyon when we went rafting thru the canyon. Very cool experience, truly one of the most memorable of my life.

me and the wife just came back from vegas, a few weeks ago. we rented a car for the duration we were there (4nights). we were planning on doing the same thing but, we drove out to red rock instead. and then to "THE GUN STORE". the gun store+60 bucks = 40 rounds of FN M249 SAW.

Somehow, the original post was overlooked by some of the folks on here. We aren't going for hiking, rafting or to play with machineguns. For those folks, join the military and enjoy yourself. Been there, done that X2.

Thanks to the folks that actually had some relevant input to the original topic.

Have not, did hike it for a few days though. Fantastic scenery either way, I'm sure.

    Take the Tour..

They'll start off by skimming the treetops and then diving into the Canyon.. like falling off the edge of the Earth.. :wow:

You'll love the part where they appear to be flying right into the Canyon walls, only to climb up and barely make it over..

Bunch of Jokers.. but it was fun.. :wavey:
