Hey all,

I was nosing around and came across this place BullpupUnlimited.com

They are making and selling a kit to turn your 870 into a Bullpup style shotgun. I don't think anyone has one yet so there aren't any reviews that I could find, but they do look pretty good. What do you think? Looks like it might be a competitor for the upcoming Kel-Tec bullpup.

The only negative I see is the price, it's pretty high at about $350 or so, give or take a bit.

Your thoughts? Would you have one if it turns out to be a quality product? What about the KT version?

Thanks

Kel-Tec is known to barely get their products out the door. Most of their long guns show up at local gun shops in tiny spurts through out the year. I've seen people having a hard time finding Sub2000s, PLR-16/22s, RFBs, PMR30s and now the KSG.

Usually poly guns can be pumped out rather quickly so either Kel-Tec is understaffed or they have a very small facility.

As far as that conversion kit goes, having the ejection port below my face doesn't sit very well to me. The guy in the 2 pictures on their home page looks uncomfortable and awkward holding the converted 870 in his hands. You can also tell that he's trying to stay away from the ejection port as too with his chicken wing stance. Bullpup conversions aren't known to have stellar triggers either.

Bottom line, I'd only buy a bullpup that was design to be a bullpup.

Realistically we'll be lucky to see the retail version before the end of the year. Early in the new year is my best guess right now. Keltec have know they're onto a great thing with this gun so they've been testing the hell out of it to try to avoid any issues with it and have made lots of changes and improvements to it since we first saw it at the start of the year. Some of the things I know are being worked on are the ability to use 3" shells(originally it was 2 3/4" only, even though it had a 3" chamber), chokes, feeding reliability, ejection reliability, trigger mechanism and more.

There are a couple of prototype and T&E versions going around for sale, but they've been sold off without Keltec's permission and are not the final version of the gun. You'll have to pay some serious money if you want one of these early versions, I know of one that went for $4000. There is also the possibility of Keltec taking legal action over the guns that were sold on without permission, though I'm not sure how likely that is to happen given how swamped they are right now.

About 20 years ago there was a company called "Bullpup Industries" that made bullpup conversions for the Remington 870, Mini-14 and other firearms. They were expensive and had silicone fluid hydraulic trigger systems that connected the bullpup trigger to the original trigger.

I just hope that the Keltec isn't fragile and crappy. I want one too.
It sounds like Kel Tec is putting in a lot of time to get the gun right before it's released. I hope so because I intend buying the first one I see and I'm tired of being a bata tester for guns that were sold when they were still full of bugs. And I'm not talking about Kel Tec.

Just an FYI for anyone interested. I emailed bullpupunlimited and was told that magazine extensions can still be used on the bullpup. Kinda cool.

WARNING: Stay away from the KelTec shotgun (IMHO). I have seen it in operation under match conditions and it malfunctions like crazy. I will say that it does shoot nice, but it is not that easy to manipulate, especially under stressful conditions. I hope they get it right, but don't look for them any time soon. For clarification, I am not bashing KT, just issuing a shotgun alert.

I suppose it fits the tacti-cool market. I like my 870 with the wood furniture and 18.5" barrel. Besides, I'm too cheap to spend significantly more on an accessory than the gun...unless we're talking optics on a nice a rifle.
