I just started a couple of weeks ago. Picked up a Hohner Marine Band from Amazon in the key of C as a starting point.

I bought one last year, I don't give it as much time as I should. There are many good instructionals on Youtube.

Someone once said it's the easiest instrument to play, the hardest to master. There is some truth in that.

very curious myself........I have been able to accomplish a lot of things that are on my "bucket list" but try as I might, couldn't get the hang of a harmonica. Tried several times in my life.....nada.

I love it! I suck, but it sure is fun. I'm self-taught on the guitar and ran across Adam Gussow's YouTube videos and website so I thought I'd give the harp a try.

    Check out:

Also purchased a Hohner Special 20, Complete Idiot's Guide to the Harmonica and Harmonica for Dummies. I like Idiot's Guide the best. Comes with a CD, too.

Adam has online lessons you can download for minimal fees. I'm in the middle of the beginner's lessons.

I want to. My problem is that I over-complicate everything, so I'd have to buy a case of them, one in every possible key. Then figure out which one to use to play whichever song I wanna play.

My son has one in G, and I can make some not-so-annoying sounds with it.

    that looks easy enough.

The thing that gets me is how to make my mouth small enough to only get one hole.

Yeah. Everything tells you to pucker real tight but the opposite is true. You want to really get that harp into your mouth. The trick is to retrain your mouth muscles to make a small enough hole for one hole draws and blows while not bleeding over into another hole. I still have trouble with it.

I find that it's best if I practice for 10 to 15 minutes at a time several times a day or I get frustrated. I still have those days where it seems I can't draw or blow a darn thing!

I'm currently working on Floyd's Hotel, Stompin', 12-bar blues progression, Shuffle Blues Rhythm, and Bending the 4 Draw from Adam's website.

I've stepped away from the Complete Idiot's and For Dummies because I don't want to play Oh Susanna or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I want to play the blues, man!

I used to play, then moved up to playing blues on one in a local band.

No! Do tongue blocking. You will get a much better sound, and be able to do many other little tricks later.

One can make one in G and one in C go a long ways.

But Im not that great. I love Bob Dylan. so I had to get the rack so I could play guitar at the same time.

Now Im all about G Love and special Sauce. So the head gear still comes in handy.

I got to tell you. Its just a practice thing.

But when I was playing music all the time, I found it to be a useful tool. Particularly when coming up with melodies.
