I know these are extremly expensive and impractical for me but they seem like fun to shoot. Would they hold there value? How far can a beginner shoot one of these?

they shoot a few kMs. the rounds are about 6-7 bucks a pop. id imagine not many of them get shot a lot so i would guess they dont get much wear and would retain more than the usual resale value.

they are fun to shoot , before you get one find a suitable range , a 200yd rifle range is going to seem like a waste

expensive rifle, expensive round, i wear plugs and muff and i still feel like i'm losing my hearing, but fun to shoot

How much further will it shoot than a bolt action .308 without specialized training?

Here I am shooting my favorite rifle at a competition a couple of years ago. Figured it would make some good porn for your thread.

1.5 miles is the record, if you do your part.

Actually the furthest comfirmed kill is 1.5 miles. Done in Afganistan by a Canadian sniper team using American loaded 50BMG ammo. It seems there is some difference in how the ammo is loaded because they (Canadians) said the American ammo was much better. In terms of distance and accuracy

They have a used one in a local gun shop here in town for just over 3k. Minus optics and appears stripped down a bit. Did have a tripod but i know jack about rifles to say what kinda shape it would be in one way or another.

If that's the semi auto it's a good deal. I had one when they first came out. They were a lot cheaper then but I guess everything was 20 years ago. I had to travel pretty far to use it and the prices went up on them so I was able to sell it for what I paid for it. I think there has been some changes in the barrels on the more recent ones. A bolt action should be more accurate.

While cool beyond cool....the lack of practicality overwhelms my sensibility about wanting one.

    - Beyond expensive gun
    - HUGE
    - heavy
    - LOUD
    - 1 round = 1 box 7,62x39
    - No place that isn't a day trip to shoot it sensibly.

Way down my list of things I want or need - but still extremely cool!

I think that's what he said.

They say the M107 LRSR .50 is reliable/consistant for personnel targets +/- 1500m and material targets +/- 2000 meters.

    Compare that to the M24 .308 (7.62mm) which is reliable/consistant +/- 800m.

I think the .50 takes the cake on that.

Not exactely. There is a big difference in shooting a piece of paper at 1.5 miles and shooting a person moving at a angle from you at 1.5 miles. Especially at elevation. With a shot that was that remarkable I think some of the specifics of it needed to be mentioned.
