    I'm attempting to learn about editing home video. I just don't get codecs. Do I just pick a codec and install it? If so, where? I guess I could ask a hundred more questions, but I'm really just looking for some basic help!!

    Thanks

    A codec is sort of a language pack that explains a certain media's 'dialect' to the OS.

    DivX is one; QuickTime is another.

    Usually there is a method to the madness, either better quality or better compression.

    There are codec packs that need to be downloaded in order to get some of the more obscure (or proprietary) media files to work on your PC.

    codec=coder & decoder.

    to compress the raw video stream you need coder to decompress you need decoder. most "codec" packs you can download only include decoders which means you canot use them do compress your video
