I'm 58, wife is the same, and I've noticed that all of our friends in their 70's are selling their multi story homes in favor of single story ones.

They always say the same thing, can't climb the stairs anymore. Any of you guys in your 70's experiencing the same thing?

Is that what we've got to look forward too?

Pushing 60 and 17 years ago I bought a house on one level. I can walk up 7 stories of steps or climb a column ladder higher than that just don't like to.
Later in life a house on one level may mean the difference between going home or to a nursing home.

"Anybody on board in their 70's?"

    Yeah, 79.
Had three slice and dice shoulder operations and a couple Left knee operations.

I'm pretty active but yeah, if I'm typical, your body does begin to hurt somewhere most of the time after about 60.

Like a few weeks ago I shot a 12 ga shotgun and something in my shoulder hurt like hell.

My house is a single level but most every where in it is 1 to 3 steps.
Since the last knee operation I have to mostly take one step at a time. Right foot up, Left foot down. If I forget and step down with my right foot, my left knee bends too much and it's like sticking a knife in the knee.

Lost a lot of strength in the last 10 years and a whole lot in the last 5-6 years.

Your skin also gets worse looking every year.

Old age definitely sucks, compared to about age 50 or 60

Yup. Work in home care. I see mostly men after 70 needing a walker and steps are a no go. Stepping in a tub is truly an adventure for many of them also. Buy a single level and rip out the tub and replace it with a very low step in shower with a good strong seat while you can!

You can't fight the calendar. I've been active all my life, now I'm just short of 69 y.o. and there's no way I'd have a multilevel house. Simple things like getting up off an exercise mat or jumping up into the box on my 4wd truck are no longer eyeblink maneuvers.

70 YO here. If it gets where I can't keep up the yard here, I'll hire it done. I'm not going anywhere.

In my 70's. As a friend of mine says, getting old ain't for sissies.

I still cave, but no more 18 hour in a wetsuit trips for me, plus the hike to the cave and back to the car afterwards. I just do easy caves and short 5 or 6 hour trips now. Can't hike miles like I used to.

Steep downhill and even stairs are giving me problems now. Don't want knee surgery yet. I can't afford the recovery down time while running my cattle farm. I just slow down some, but keep on trucking.

I ain't ready for that rocking chair yet, but when we built our house with stairs, we put everything we needed to live with on the first floor. Also made all doorways on the first floor wheelchair accessible. You never know. My brother didn't and when he became a paraplegic (due to an accident), he had to have some doors ripped out and rebuilt.

He'll just play the tumor card.

I'm 53, and we have stairs out the butt. It's fine for now...
