I just had a can of three inchers in olive oil for a late lunch. I had really forgotten the joy of these little critters until I saw Alton Brown raving about them on the TV the other night, so I picked up a few. I usually eat 'em on saltines but today I just had them neat.

Yum, and oh, yeah, omega-3s, to boot! :eat:

My wife is from Sicily and I've had large, fresh sardines there. Not the small ones in a can. My mother in law cooks them.

One of my favorite snacks is a can of sardines in oil dumped on top of a bowl of rice. Stir it around and enjoy.

    Love em:eat:

I often have a sardine and habanero hot sauce sandwich for lunch or with feta cheese and olives.

Been eating them all my life, I just like them in water... My wife politely asks for me to eat'em on the porch though due to the undeniable sardinian aroma..

Crown Prince Brisling in Olive Oil on Saltines.

Or the big sardine filets mashed up with a little mayo and pickle relish, spread on rye bread.

    Yum.

I like them too. When I was young, long before feeze dried food was commonly or cheaply available, my family used to take them on backpacking trips as snack for the trail.

+1 we must be about the same age. That's about all we had for picnics, and extended trips.

I remember as a kid we used to eat them when we went fishing or crabbing with my grampa. Saltines, sardines, smoked oysters and kipper snacks with a little tabasco. That was fishin lunch.

I grew up eating them. Was a young adult when someone mentioned washing them in vinegar, and eating them with mustard on a cracker. They are all good.

Something else I'm especially fond of is pickled herring.
