I've considered getting a Glock for quite some time and the G31 looks to be quite an impressive arm in my estimation. I'm curious to know how it behaves when it lands a 125.gr. JHP on the chest of a perp. Please pipe up if you've ever used the .357 Sig in self defense.

I've only killed men with a 9mm and a 40 cal, I'll update this post when I use a 357 SIG.

OP, I'm like 99.999999999% certain the JMS was joking. I doubt you will get any actual uses. Your best bet is to ask Massad Ayoob, or check for police shootings. From what I've heard, it is a very good human defense caliber. I have heard words like "bolt of lightning" and "one-shot-stop" associated with it. Both of those remarks came from the Texas State Police if I remember correctly. It has a good street record, and great ballistics. It should be especially impressive from the G31's longer barrel. I'm thinking a G33 will be one of my next purchases. I wanted a G26, but I feel the G33 will give me REAL 9mm ballistics (close to or better than a 9x19 shot from a G17), but out of a subcompact. Recoil is no big deal, but the blast is a little boomier. I think it's the best SD caliber in the small frames.

I guess my whole point of this post was to tell you not to get your hopes up about first hand shooting accounts with the caliber. Not many members here have actually shot someone. Those that have don't usually like to share them for some reason (not all), and there are not likely to be many that used .357Sig. But good luck!

I know when I shot my brothers, it rattled the ceiling tiles at the indoor range.

From 09/16/2011 at Cleveland PD's range.

We were shooting into a two year old First Choice N-Force Level II vest which was over some clay at approx 98 degrees.
The vest stopped everything we threw at it, with .357SIG, other than a .44magnum or 12ga. slug, the .357sig had the most backface deformation (BFD) measured (which means it will hurt when you get hit)

With the Glock 31 and the following ammo:

Winchester Ranger 125gr. Bonded JHP
avg. 1380fps and 28mm

Winchester Ranger 125gr. T-series SXT
avg. 1350fps and 29mm

the next closest BFDs were three different .40S&W rounds shot out of a Glock 35 (longer barrel!!!) at 23/24mm.

The .44magnum was a Ruger Vaquero with avg 1360fps with a 30mm for BFD using Hornady 240gr. XTP.

The Remington 870 from 16 feet away shot a Federal Maximum Hi-Shok 1oz slug into the vest. It did not penetrate the vest. BFD was measured at 58mm (OUCH!!!). All handgun rounds were shot at 6" from the vest.

---edit---
Now, if only Winchester would load this round to 1500 fps, that would be awesome! I will have to dig up my old Corbons and chrono them.

not my personal experience. but my uncle is a police officer in VA and he was telling me of an incident that one of his fellow officers that he is friends with was involved in... two officers were at a convenience store and saw a man dumping out tobacco out of a cigar onto the ground, they knew what was up so they preceded to approach the man in the car, well come to find out the man had a warrant in another county and didn't want to cooperate so he threw the car in reverse and almost hit one of the officers then when he threw it in D he revved up and was going for the other officer as soon as he started for the 2nd officer the officer pulled out his G31 and simultaneously jumped on the hood of the car while firing one shot through the windshield, that round struck the suspect in the chest and killed him on the spot... according to my uncle the in car cameras caught the whole thing on video. and there was another incident in Tx (I think) where there was a stand off between an officer and a guy that was shooting out of a semi truck. the first officer was shooting his .45acp and struck the door several times without penetrating through, a second officer shows up and fires one round of .357sig and ends the threat instantly killing the suspect..

I have used these calibers as well as .45 ACP. Once I used a 10mm and the radioactive fall out caused a great deal of problem. It was when I traveled in the former USSR. Some guy in Chernobyl attacked me and I drew my Glock 20. Only one shot was fired.:tongueout:

Perfect example of the ballistic advantage of the 357sig. There are many times where law enforcement officers will have to shoot through barriers. The pure velocity of the 357sig round accomplishes this.

This is why winchester made the pdx-1 bonded round. So it doesn't expand upon first impact but soft tissue.

Oh, and I was also taught to jump on the hood of the car and shoot perpendicular through the window as well.. Great work to those LEO's that were on duty!

Every time I think about this, I shop ammo and the prices scare me off. :wow:
Maybe its a good thing those barrels are always out of stock. :whistling:

At one time I had a .357SIG barel in my G27, and it had real SNAP to it!!! I didn't find it pleasant to shoot, but as a SD round I expect it'll do the job.....

To paraphrase what Clint Smith used to say about toting a handgun on the hip:

"It's not supposed to be comfortable, it's supposed to be comforting!"

Good luck, and give us a report when you get it......

DISCLAIMER- I was not involved, but I saw the autopsy report.

Left to right at slight downward angle, 125 JHP through shoulder, across top of heart, broke rib on right side and stopped under skin, about 16" penetration.
Fatal wound

I don't know from what firearm the round was fired from but I did see the .357 sig casings on the ground and I saw the results. Multiple shots fired, from what I could tell on the scene was that only one connected, a head shot. Hard to describe but it looked as if his head was mangled from the inside. It was all lumpy looking. No exit wound. Not to sound morbid but it was impressive. I was sold on .357 sig that day.

Your post would sound a little better with an apostrophe in "brothers". ;)
His brother's what?

(edit: Oh, he didn't shoot his two brothers; he shot his brother's .357 sig, or did he shoot guns belonging to more than one brother? I really took AZson's remark the wrong way, I thought he was confessing to murder, facetiously of course!)

OH, NEVER MIND!!!
