I went through the "crossing the line" ceremony on the U.S.S. Vancouver LPD-2 in 1983 while serving with A/1/3 on a Westpac. My Dad went through the ceremony in WWII.

Don't know if they even permit such initiations today-- entirely different culture.

Vancouver was a good ship, and her captain a good skipper who had the misfortune of hitting an unchartered reef off the coast of western Australia and tore up both screws. They transferred the embarked Marines to the U.S.S. Denver LPD-9, a real garbage scow in comparison.

Libbo in Fremantle/Perth was sweet, though!

I crossed in 95' and still did the PT water torture, crawling across the non skid deck and most of the other good natured hazing. Then, I crossed in 97' and all we had was a ceromony and the CO read a prepared speech. It's sad really, a lot of old traditions seem to be slipping away because people complain and whine.

Why they bother signing on in the first place if they can't hack it I will never understand...

I went thru the "initiation" in '77 aboard the USS New Orleans LPH.
Really good chow that night, steak and lobster tail, IIRC.

I went through in early 95, on the Bellau Wood. It was kind of lame though, with all kinds of restrictions. About six months later, they pulled our shellback certificates out of our SRB's and gave them to us. I think they were supposed to shred them, because the shellback ritual was now considered a hazing event.
