im thinking of giving it a try .
Which '.45' ?
edited: In many states that would not be legal. Perhaps not in Mich.
Where? In FL it would be 100% legal.
It is legal to hunt deer with a 45 Auto in Michigan.
I shot a doe in the head with my G30. I was taking a pee and just had my pistol with me and my 45/70 was in my stand. The doe was 15y away and I shot it in the head as I peed. Bang-FLOP was the result.
I would advise against it but if you insist, use a heavy bullet and keep shots within 25-30y and go for the heart/lungs. Don't get fancy.
We have mulies here in the Sierras.
I was on this kick for a while to carry my Llama Mini-Max when walking about on my property. It was loaded with some +P 230 grain hollow points. The short back story is an idiot hunter on my property wounded the deer and then ran around waving his shotgun around screaming now what do I do? I pulled out my .45 and approached the deer who was running, falling, running falling: the first shot hit him in the skull but did not penetrate! One round apparently missed (in my defense he was trying to gore me) and the third round penetrated his skull and he dropped.
I would not choose a .45 as my primary weapon for hunting deer. I considered the idea briefly - not using .45ACP, but rather using some 450 SMC or .45 Super but thought better of the idea.
thanks I planned to ues sabers i think that will work plan to keep it close
I plan to take a shotgun and use the pistol for 20 or less
I don't know if you reload or not. But "beratooth Bullets," makes a cast bullet for the specificially for the 45 auto.....
This bullet, with a lung shot 'generally' passes right through deer even at 50 yds. I believe you will be fine with a GS at 'no more' than 20yds and a very well paced lung shot.
Good hunting... Stay in close .
Can't remember the movie, but Joe Pesci shot one with a 1911.
I'd get a 6" barrel if you must carry the 45 acp.
C'mon now, is 1 inch really gonna make that much of a difference?
I've killed deer with the 40, the 45 should do the job as well, just keep the shots close and accurate and be ready to track (although I did not have to).
