Just read an article in the March/April issue of American Handgunner on page 32 about better shooting. In this article Max Michel states that the first quality he looks for is speed in a newcomer to the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. He states that he doesn't mind if the person gets D's and misses as long as their fast because it's easier to teach accuracy to a fast shooter than it is to get a slow shooter to speed up.

p/s: The above statement was imported from briaennos forum !

    it's true in my observation
even in beginners and newbies , you istantly recognize someone who'll be good by their inherent speed

For me to be able to learn accuracy, i will have to train and practice.

For me to be able to learn speed, i will have to train, practice, exercise;g, diet;P, etc. ;f

So i believe that Max is telling the truth. :)

There is some truth to his observations. I'm a very accurate shooter, but I'm often so OC about doing things properly that I couldn't speed up if I wanted to ;1

I'm no Brian Enos or Max Michel, but I've been doing this for more thna ten years, so I'll offer my opinion based on that limited experience.

I think it's one of those "six of one; half dozen of the other." In other words, I don't think it's matter of a formula, as I think you can get there either way.

I do believe that certain styles of learn favor some personality type more than others. For people who want charge, charge, charge you can't get them to hold back anyway. They're going to go at top speed no matter what, so they have no choice but to learn to shoot more accurately at their natural speed. Some get more psychological payback from getting good hits and lots of points. Those people have to be coached to gradually increase their speed while maintaining an adequate level of accuracy.

I don't think it's tough to find extremes who fit in either category. TGO (Rob Leatham) would be in the first, while Brian Enos would be the latter.

Most of us fall in between.
