So I have two revolvers. A S&W 686 357mag and a S&W 500 mag. I have always wanted a 44 mag to complete the collection so I finally went out and got me one. It’s a Ruger super red hawk 44 mag with the 9.5 barrel I’ve never owned a Ruger but I had heard nothing but good things about them. I shot about 150 rounds through her today of various flavors including some hot buffalo bore with no issues at all. interestingly enough I have never shot a 44 mag so the first shot was somewhat surprising it felt like shooting a 22 compared to the 500. I really like this gun and I can say now I am a Ruger and a S&w guy lol.. this gun is massive and it is big for a 44 but compared to the 500 somehow it just seems small.

Once you go 500 Mags, you may never stop! I've had several 500 Mag models since 2003, now down to a 6" barreled Performance Center and an 8 3/8" original, both keepers.
What's not to like, great triggers, very accurate and a massive power range. Don

C ongratulations on your new gun! How does the trigger on that Redhog compare to your S&W 686? Every DA Ruger I've ever shot needed a trigger job to be anywhere near as good as a Smith & Wesson. But a good gunsmith can work wonders on a DA Ruger trigger and even the Single actions can benefit from a good trigger job.
I used to have a Ruger Speed six with fixed sights and a 2 3/4" barrel and My younger brother did a trigger job on it and added some Wolff springs and bobbed the hammer on it and that was my carry gun until my brother talked me out of it and made it his own. I really liked the speed six. It was just slightly larger than an SP101 but held one more round, and much more compact and lighter weight than the GP100.
My son had one of the 9 1/2" barrelled Super Redhawks.
He sold it without offering it to me.
Not sure why as I am sure I would have paid more than the gun shop did for it.
I had no more real use for it than he did but that has never stopped me before.
The S&W 460 XVR I picked up a few years back more than makes up for missing out on that Ruger, I think.

I had one of those Rugers but it was in 454 Casull.
Sold it en route my first S&W 500 Mag. The Ruger was a fine gun but I was and still am a power junkie.
The Ruger had a history to it. I was working for Sandia National Labs Military Liaison and we were hosting British Ministry of Defense folks as the US had sold them the Trident SLBM system, my program. The Brits loved typical US attitudes about guns, so I took 3 to my range. Was watching the Casull and silence after one pulled the trigger.
Dud round, had never had one in 20 yrs of reloading, haven't had one in the nearly 30 yrs since. Just removed the round and everything after went well. Brits had ear to ear grins.
Asked them if their anti gun attitudes were as bad as I thought they were? They said, unfortunately yes. Don
While the 500 is an answer to an unasked question (unless the question is “what is the most pointless revolver that can be made?”) the Ruger Redhawk I have - also in the 9.5” edition - is a pleasure, and is limited in my rotation only by its rather expensive dietary requirements. It is a kitten with standard 44s.
I used to carry it on a tac belt with my KaBar and reloaders when roaming the woods until sanity finally crept in and I realized if I lugged 20 lbs less armament it was easier for me to puff up hills.
Fun, great pistol, of dubious practical value, but irreplaceable for me and it will never leave.
