Just picked up a G19 Gen4 recently, and had the chance to get to the range this past Saturday to sling some lead through it. I was not amused.
I've been carrying a G36 for about a year now, and I recently saw footage of an IHOP robbery nearby with 4 assailants which completely changed my philosophy on concealed carry. I basically decided that 31rds of 9mm +P just makes more sense than 13rds of .45ACP when you look at the fact that many robberies nowadays occur with multiple criminals working together as a team.
I decided that I'd finally pick up a pistol I've always wanted, one that I think everyone should have, the Glock 19. I did some research on the issues people were having with the Gen4s, and it looked like things had been worked out for the most part with the 043 RSA. I decided in the end to go with a Gen4 since people were also having issues with recent Gen3s as well. Also, I'm a southpaw so I'd benefit from the reversible mag release, and I prefer the non-backstrapped SF grip size to the standard Gen3 size.
I bought a G19 Gen4 from Glockmeister and I was happy to see it arrive with an RXX serial number prefix and born-on date of August. I saw that it had the 043 RSA, but the older-style 336 ejector. I figured (hoped) I'd be fine as people were reporting great success with the 043 spring.
So Saturday I load up the bag with a bunch of different flavors of 9mm I had on-hand and hit the range. Here's what I ended up with:
50rds Remington UMC 115gr FMJ - 3 stovepipes (all in the same mag)
50rds Federal Champion 115gr FMJ - 1 stovepipe
50rds CCI Blazer 115gr FMJ - 1 stovepipe
50rds Winchester Ranger 147gr FMJ - 1 stovepipe
50rds Winchester Whitebox 115gr FMJ - 0 failures
50rds Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P JHP - 1 stovepipe (this one concerned me the most as this is my carry ammo and I thought the issues were mainly with super light loads)
7 stovepipe failures in 300 rounds. Some of them were still facing forward, some of them facing to the rear, a lot of them were facing out to the side. I promise you I was not limpwristing or anything. I even tried limpwristing a few rounds and they did not result in any failures of any kind. If there's a silver-lining, I guess it's that I didn't notice too much brass smacking me in the face. I did have a few rounds smack me in the baseball cap, but I think it was hitting the lane wall to my right and bouncing into me. And of course it was accurate as hell, so that's a plus.
I called Glock this morning and talked to someone who requested I email him with my personal details so he could get a prepaid shipping label emailed to me. They will replace the ejector but they need the frame to do so. Heck, you all know the drill by now.
Well there it is. Discuss!
