Yesterday I went to my oldest daughters school to see the presentation that she and her classmates have been working on all school year. They have been studying different countries and put together posters about the country and a short verbal presentation.
While all the visitors were standing around waiting for things to begin this lady walked up to my wife and I and asked if our toddler was of Hungarian descent. (She's not, my heritage is German and my wife traces hers primarily to Scotland.) We struck up a conversation and my MIL, who also happened to be there, asked this lady when she moved here since it was clear that she was a first generation immigrant. She said that she had moved here in 1947. Then she lamented that the America that she came to in 1947 was gone. Seems her father didn't like the socialist mindset that was setting in over there so he moved his family to America. This lady was very upset that what she fled over 60 years ago is now here.

Some things that are so obvious to some, are so difficult to see by others.

Last summer we went to a picnic and met a 95 year old great grandmother from Germany who came here after WWII. She had some interesting observations. Still sharp as a tack and very active. She and her brother were both conscripted into some kind of home defense corps at one time. Sounded like they were lucky to not be in an area that came under Soviet control.

Its an old adage, but still true...
Those ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it. :crying:
How long ago did US schools stop teaching real history and civics? :steamed:
