Let’s set the scene. Around 100 rioters approach your home, they’ve just looted a neighbors empty house of all valuables. You see smoke a few blocks down, likely from the same crowd. You and your well-trained wife are hidden in a defensive position behind cover. You each have an AR. For fun we’ll say you also have a shotgun with some rubber slugs.

The crowd approaches rapidly, clearly intent on destruction. There are no clear leaders. At least one person has a malatov. Several have baseball bats, bricks, etc. You don’t see any guns, but looters in the area have been known to shoot from time to time.

Everything you own is in your house, which you just paid off. Your little pet dogs are in the house and you cannot safely escape and save them too. Furthermore, at least two unsecured firearms are stashed inside. You’ve called 911 but nobody is coming to save you. You DO NOT GET TO CHANGE THIS HYPOTHETICAL THOUGHT EXPERIMENT. No ‘should have picked a better neighborhood’ etc. This is the situation. How do you respond? Responses are anonymous.

ETA: response #1 is ‘shooting’, not shouting.

As soon as the cocktail is ignited, shoot it with the shotgun. That'll cook that fool and maybe a few more around. While he runs like richard pryor and hopefully they follow. Megaphoners, bats and brick holders next.
Reality: as they come for you next, a couple of rubber rounds, might turn the idiots.

My first "move" is not to answer an online poll that might be used against me if I took any of the actions in the poll.

So, loading up my big truck is not an option?

Also, my dogs are not small and can hold their own against a crew of rioters, hell, give it a year and the young one would probably be a better deferent than my rifle, he's gonna be big.

But for this, I guess the Molotov guy gets the warning and of he goes to throw, it's clear and present danger time.

My little dogs are in danger. They made a fatal mistake that some of them wont ever make again.

Make sure your homeowners insurance is paid up and bug out. Not the sexy answer, but hanging in rapidly becomes a no win situation.

They'll have to break down or climb over my 6 ft fence and gate. then it's several hundred feet to the house. if they cross the fence / gate then it's on. There will be a lot of bodies

Run out and apologize for my white privilege. Offer them up my wife and tell them I have insurance so it is ok if they loot and steal everything.

Have a couple cases of Molotovs ready yourself and do a preemptive attack.

Is the first option really to “shout” at them in a certain order?

I’m particularly interested in the concepts of ‘warning shots’ and ‘less lethal rounds’. During normal peacetime these have no place in the civilian self defense world. But these are not normal times.

Own a musket for home defense, Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?' As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man. He's dead on the spot.

Draw my pistol on the second man. Misses him entirely because its smoothbore and nails the neighbor's dog. I have to resort to the cannon at the top the stairs loaded with grapeshot.

“Tally ho, lads." The grapeshot shreds two men in the blast. The sound and extra shrapnel sets off car alarms.

Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are difficult to stitch-up.

Just as the founding fathers intended....

Ah, see after the cannon I'd have dropped the rifle and gone rapier and tomahawk, with a nice warcry, strike fear in their hearts.

This. If it's already that bad, might as well take as many out with you as you can. Seriously, what would you be waiting for?
