Just a quick question, does anybody here keep some spare ammo in the car. I just had the recent idea of doing it, I edc a g29 so I got 2 20 round boxes of hornady xtp to keep in the center counsel.

Loaded mags would be good. Boxes for the range, good. Ammo in boxes for defense= no good.

How do you figure that having spare carry ammo in my car is no good? If something were to ever happen it would only take me seconds to open a box and load up a 10 rounds g29 mag.

Easy, the average self defense shooting only lasts for a few seconds.

I usually have a couple speed loaders for the revolvers in the car.

but isn't having ammo in the car better than having no ammo at all.

If you have time to load up a magazine, you have time to leave. At least that's how a liberal lawyer would see it. Buy you a couple of G20 mags to keep loaded in the car, and maybe one for the nightstand.

It is, but having loaded mags is better than having ammo boxes.

I cant argue with that, but it's still almost useless in boxes.

three things affect ammo longevity grossly. Heat, humidity, & vibration.

Leaving ammo in a hot car subject to vibration will rapidly degrade the powder, compared to stable temp/nonvibrating storage.

I'd not worry about ammo changed out at every range session. I'd not shoot ammo that had gone through a couple summers in the glovebox. I don't buy 'hauled' gun show ammo for just that reason. It'd be a rare problem, unusual as heck, but I'd rather it be someone else's unusual problem.

No, Actually I got the ammo for free. and I am not trying to accomplish anything. I already have spare ammo in the car, therefor I have accomplished more that I wanted to. But thanks.

    This.
I have done the same for a little while, had 0 issues and shoot the rounds about once every other month or so. I am sure they would be fine for much longer but I like to shoot what I carry every so often so I figure might as well shoot that and replace it with the new stuff.

And if I only had enough spare money to buy one or the other each month, what the hell order does it matter I buy it in anyway?

    Yes, absolutely right! :wavey:

This is what I always carry in the trunk of my car......have been doing it for years. There is a shoulder bag with 100rds of ammo on stripper clips with it.....yes, also the trigger lock!

I don't give a damn if the average self defense shooting is only a few seconds.....if I happen to be there when innocents are being killed, children in a school yard, Luby's cafe, courthouse steps, post office, Virginia Tech campus, Columbine High School, whatever.....and it's either I do something or allow these lives to be sacrificed.......THEN I WILL DO MY DUTY TO PROTECT MY FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS, FELLOW MAN.....GUN FREE ZONE, OR NOT!

If you have a gun you certainly have a mag for that gun correct? If you have a CCW then you already have the ability to carry a loaded weapon. Which means a mag is in the gun loaded locked and cocked and ready to go. I see no reason why extra ammo in the car isn't a good idea mag or no mag. The gunfight won't last that long and if you need to reload then good for you.
