I'm going to be buying a dog for pheasant and duck hunting. Does anyone have any experience hunting with or just owning one of these dogs? What are the pros and cons of the breed for hunting and overall field work?

    Any and all opinions welcome.

Not sure about these dogs, but for what you want to do a good Labrador is perfect.

Here is my 11yo lab after a Minnesota late December hunt.

Not an AWS, but we have a Boykin Spaniel (hard to tell the two apart). Legend has it that the Boykin is part AWS. I understand the coat on the AWS is a bit better suited to cold water, while the Boykin is more of a southern/warm temp. dog. Our Boykin has great hunting instincts, loves the water, is great with our son, is very trainable and loves to please. I have heard that AWS's have the same temperment.

Boykins are great dogs. Our new one is 4 months and is retrieving well. She is doing great on her obedience training. I may hunt her some late this season.
