Iran has just launched a satellite into Earth orbit, containing two turtles, a rat, and several worms.

The bad news is that if Iran can launch a satellite into orbit, then they are not very far from being able to fire rockets that could carry warheads to the Continental USA.

Is this rocket launch just for scientific research, as Iran claims? Or could Iran be using these turtles, worms, and rat to cover its real purpose for the test??

Weird, I thought we were the only ones goofy enough to launch a politician.

Alas, they unfortunately did not send this rat ( circled in red in this photo below ) into space:

Most Americans are not aware that President Ahmadinejad was one of the students who stormed the American Embassy back in 1979 and took the entire Embassy staff hostage.

The above photo shows him next to one of the blindfolded hostages. He has hated the USA his entire life, as his parents were strongly anti-American as well.

This man is never going to negotiate with our country. He hates us with an absolute passion.

Where does PETA stand in all this?

Seriously...It's only a matter of time with Iran

If they've achieved "orbit" then couldn't they pretty much hit anywhere they wanted on the planet?

The "can't we all get along" crowd will never understand this.

It is only a matter of time.

Well getting to orbit and hitting somewhere precise on the globe is a tad different but getting to orbit is a huge step for them..

This might mean something if they had also figured out how to stop the 'Minutemen' missiles targeted on them, now that they have insisted on coming to our attention.....

They should be able to plan a "Deorbit" that would land somewhere in the continental US without too much trouble. I would think they could probably get it down to any state without any problem. Think along the lines of the Apollo recovery. Hitting a specific city such as Washington DC would be a bit tougher, but with GPS and other technology should still be attainable.

Yes, cause the atmosphere interferes with God's cell phone calls to us here on earth. 20th century technology in the hands of 7th century ideologues :(

Maybe God will call them now and tell them that if the can't accept science, they don't get to use the fruits of science either.

The Pentagon retains the 'off' switch to the GPS system....

The deorbit burn still takes calculations and other things but getting to space was a start. Like I said earlier it's only a matter of time

...and in the meantime we are ending our manned space programs in favor of more public entitlement programs...

I predict the Israeli "response" on this will be in the works within the year and the current administration will be of little help.

Actually I though I heard they were actually expanding NASA's budget--but only on the development of more efficient engines and clean energy sources--of course, by cancelling manned space flight they have removed the goal to shoot for that inspires such research.

Haven't heard really. I heard they were going to concentrate on more Earth science.

It's the spending money on highspeed trains that I have a problem with.

They allocated $50M to fund private companies to design and build a more efficient spacecraft.

The problem I have is that they scrapped the Aries IX and the Orion program...both programs were going to send humans into deep space. We were going to use Ares I-X to possibly send humans to an asteroid, as well as the moon (Orion). Meanwhile we pump millions into the ISS so that we can take butterflies there and observe how they hatch in LEO.

Scrap the trains, use a fraction of that money to subsidize airlines (and thus bring costs down), and then give the rest to NASA. Human exploration of space is crucial to our continued development as a civilization.

EDIT: One other thing: de-orbiting a satellite to crash onto a city/state isn't quite that easy. They'd have to pick a region and hope for the best. Assuming they only included enough fuel to move the satellite into junkyard orbit, it would be hard to steer correctly, because satellites can skip off the atmosphere. Also, chances are nothing would survive re-entry, aside from a bolt or other piece of metal, both of which would be harmless as terminal velocity would keep them from doing much damage.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mir#Final_days_and_deorbit

Read about the de-orbit of Mir. More complicated than you'd think.

2nd EDIT: Look at the stats of the satellite and you'll see it's harmless:

    • Dimensions: 40 cm * 40 cm * 40 cm
    • Weight: 27 kg
