Cold water. I use the old mug, brush and shaving soap. Try it. Really. Cold water is all you'll need.

After washing out your sink fill it with cold water and add several splashes of either aqua velva or skin bracer after shave to the water. Then splash it liberally on your face and neck. It will leave you feeling fresh and stop the burning sensation.

I was actually interested in this topic myself. There were a couple of threads on this very board within the past year that included a recipe for homemade aftershave and links to high-end straight razors. Apparently, it's something of an art, this shaving business.
