Social workers on house call have always had to be on guard. Never knew in advance the amount of hostility, drugs or alcohol that was awaiting them

That's not going to work out well. Sending a social worker WITH the police might be an improvement in certain situations. Without the police? Well, we can imagine how that could turn out.

As an LEO I think this makes some sense. Of course when things go wrong, as they frequently will, a new regard for LEOs my germinate.

What was that line about a turn to the left in Albuquerque?

    This time, it's real.

I think it’s a good thing. I spend probably 85% of my shift dealing with the mentally ill, drug addicts, and the homeless. And I’m on the Fire/EMS side. The police are tied up a lot more doing the same stuff. It will allow for better resource placement. And hopefully we can get more help for all of the people who tie up the resources.

Social workers or community resource worker will not be responding to the active domestic abuse or peace disturbance calls. Officers will still respond on any of those type calls. The social workers will follow up with the people involved once it’s safe to do so.

I was on a call last week that involved a mentally ill hoarder and her neighbors. The police were sent (two cars), and my dept had an engine and medic unit respond because the hoarder was “overwhelmed” by the insistence of her neighbor to clean her property up. There was no reason at all for any of us to be there.

In the end a social worker/ crisis counselor responded and began to mediate between the neighbors. The hoarder was given some information about obtaining help to keep her property within the law and the neighbor was given information on how to utilize the legal system if needed.

I don't feel sorry for them at all. After all they took the job and think they have it all figured out. Ive know 2 guys killed at these things after being disarmed by the offender, M/01's of course.

I had a young partner, I wasn't there, in the middle of one when "Daddy" or maybe "Play Daddy" popped out from behind a corner and squeezed a Beretta 92 at his head. Luckily the moron didn't know he had to chamber a round in a semi.

So lots of luck to the social workers. You'll love the ones where the entire family are waving kitchen knives. This is another non-starter the first time one gets hurt or killed.

Do they have a cadre of social workers on call and ready to respond 24/7/365?

Social workers had an education heavily concentrated in Sociology and other social sciences. Which means they’re brainwashed.

My only question is how is 911 going to know who to send? Any cop will tell you that calls where what they encounter is different from what they were told to expect when dispatched are pretty common. And things can escalate between dispatch and arrival, so what started as a social worker call may be a police matter by the time the social worker arrives. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. It would nice if it worked.
