I live in the Socialist Republic of New Jersey and can't leave the house with a mag greater than 15 for my Hungarian AK-47, Bulgarian AK-74,Romanian PSL or Saiga 12. So I have 10 round mags for the AKs a 5 rnd for the Saiga 12 and the PSL only comes with 10 round mags (7.62 x 54R). I think all the 10 round AK mags are poly and think they are Promag. Best bet is to go to GunBot Mags. Not only do they show who has what but they let you know availability and price updated at least daily. Great for ammo also. Includes all the usual suspects like J&R, Midway, Cheaper than Dirt, Sportsman's Guide, Centerfire systems, Classic Arms, Atlantic Arms, etc. You can also try AKWorld or one of those sites. If you find a steel mag or God Forbid a Bakelite 10 round mag let me know. Problem is the poly mags are plastic and wear out or break in my experience. Seems like a few months ago we were all scrambling around to find high cap mags because it looked like Obama was going to outlaw everything and now the market is flooded with 30, 40, 45 and 73 and 75 round drums. In my opinion, nothing looks stupider than an AK with a 10 round mag! They are meant to have a 45 round evil looking bakelite banana mag hanging out of their belly! The 10 round mags remind me of a spayed Doberman!

Saiga 10rd mags fit. They need a minor alteration at the front/top in order to feed. I got one with my Saiga 5.45 which I recently converted, including installing a bullet guide. Altering the Saiga 10rd to AK 74 profile took five minutes with a Dremel.

Then, there are the Tapco mags. I have never used them. I did buy some 30rd tapcos, but I have not tried them.

I like the 10rd mag in the AK. They are great at the range. When I keep my 74 handy around the house, a 10rd full of Hornady is what is in it.

I guess it depends on where you live as to what you keep loaded in the closet. I like a loaded Mossberg 12 guage in the closet not my AK-74. I like my neighbors and don't want to shoot one through the wall but if the Jihadists or zombies come walking up the street it's AK-time! We will also go with the full 45 round bakelite not the NJ range 10 round mag!

One of the beautiful things about AKs is that they will eat anything you load in that mag. For the Bulgy 74 it gets a steady diet of Russian Surplus out of the spam can at 15 to 18 cents a round without so much as a hick-up. Too bad the spam cans of surplus AK-47 7.62 x 39 have not been around in a while. My Hungarian AKM loves them at 21 to 28 cents a round. Save the Hornady money for your AR-15. Most of the guys I know shooting ARs start with the fails to feed or fire after 100 rounds or so , no matter what they are shooting while your AK will keep on shooting until your bayonet lug melts!

5.45 with the Hornady load I use does not over penetrate...it may penetrate less than your shotgun, unless you are one of those fools who insist on using birdshot.
And, you comments on the AR are off the mark.

Looked at my AK-74 and the 10 round mag I use at the range is a Tapco. It's sturdy, fits well and snug in the Bulgarian Waffen Werks AK-74. I picked it up from Centerfire systems for a reasonable price (around 15$). I checked Gunbot Magazines yesterday and the only 10 round mags available for the 74 were VEPR 10 round mags from J&R. I think someone previously said or I read somewhere that 5.45 x 39 VEPR mags fit with a slight modification. If it was me I would just keep looking and wait for a tapco. They enjoy a pretty good name with most guys. Strange as it is, because of where I live and NJs regs. unless I shoot out of state all I use is the Tapco 10 and I have never had a fail to feed or fire and have passed about 1000 rounds thru the rifle.
