i know this might be a problem question but i need some help on an ak purchase. i have read alot on the durability and dependability of these rifles and in these trying times i think that might be something to get. i am familar with the .30 cal it shoots [owned a mini 30 for a while]. i just don't know what i need to look for. i don't want junk for sure or anything close, i also don't want something that needs upgrades.
there is a gunshow in our area this weekend so i'll start to look there.
i am familar with most defense pistols and rifles but not the ak.
thank you in advance for any help.

I might go to that same show, I need ak mags.

Im not very good at this ak thing myself, have had a few here and there.Never really found one I liked completely until my latest purchase,an older arsenal model. The newer ones already have the things most want on an ak.

Id suggest an arsenal made ak.If its just utility you want and under 4 bills, maybe a Romanian but those are sometimes hit/miss on quality.

there seems to be alot of junk out there. its a utility weapon i'm looking for but a good quality AK. i just don't want to make a mistake here, i usually know something about what i'm purchasing but not when it comes to AKs. from what iv'e read an arsenal seems to be a good choice but i'm not sure of the model differences.

Romanian WASR unless you're interested in converting a Russian Saiga, which I loved doing. WASRs are great. they're like an old horse that just won't die.

Like so many orher things, what you want to spend has a bearing on things. I can tell you that there is no better AK available than the Chinese made. The Romanian WASR's are under rated in my opinion and the Arsenals are way over priced.

Scope rail on the left of the receiver if you ever want a scope.
Threaded muzzle if you want to put a brake on. Some come with a slant brake.
What trigger it has - tapco G2 is dandy. I have 2.
    Furniture - plastic or wood?
Stock - full, side folding, or underfolding.
Care for a bayonet? It'll need a bayonet lug.

My experience with AK's has been that it doesn't matter what brand you buy, quality and reliability is going to be a complete crap shoot.

I have a Romanian SAR-1 that's supposed to be the bottom of the AK barrel, but it's been rock solid reliable since day one. It doesn't look pretty, but it's never given me any troubles of any kind.

On the other hand, I have a Vector (a supposedly mid to upper tier AK) and an Arsenal (which is supposed to be top of the heap) that malfunctioned the first time I shot them and both had to go in for repairs.

So I would say don't get too wrapped around the axle trying to decide on a specific manufacturer. Just pick out something you like. Only you can decide which style floats your boat.

I kind of wish I had bought the 5.45 AK, the ammo is super cheap...

OE Izhmash, put on by the factory in Russia!

I like it too and it saved me money on my restoration.
