I am trying to identify the carrier in San Diego I saw on google earth. Not the USS Midway CV41 but the other one farther south. It looks like a Essex or Ticonderoga class. It was never converted to an angle deck. It has a 4 on the deck but the second number is missing. If you click on the blue photo box in Google Earth on the deck it says Midway but it is not the Midway.

    Thanks.

Are you sure it's not a new-ish LHD?? (a pic would help!)

    Never mind.
I got a higher res pic. It is a more modern LHD type carrier. No elevator in the deck just on the sides.

Here she is 'up close and personal' in a shot I took last summer off the Horn of Africa while we were doing a bit of pirate hunting.

    Thanks for your service.

6 years in the Marines as a grunt and I never went to sea.:crying:

My dad served on the USS Philippine Sea CV47 during Korea. I want to get a close up look at an Essex or Ticonderoga class someday.

no worries, I was civilian helicopter contracting doing re-supply for the Navy. As an old Army guy I have more sea-time in 8-ish years than most anybody in the Navy/Marines. And had 1/2 of those years off to boot!

USS Boxer, Wasp class amphibious assault ship.

About 6 months ago she had a swine flu outbreak on board.

Made for a rough cruise according to friends who had to deal with it.

I think your options are Intrepid up in New York City or Lexington in (I think) Charleston, SC.

The rest have been pretty much cut up for razor blades or sunk as coral reefs. Like the (again, I think) Oriskany a couple of years back off Florida.

    How did you manage that!?

I had just under a year on boats, with most of it on the Iwo Jima, LPH-2. It was the same boat in the movie Heartbreak Ridge.
