Dang it, to make a long story short there was some excess oil on my gun with a stainless steel finish and the gunshop owner used a rag to wipe it dry. The rag was damp with formula 409! Crap, should I soak it in oil over night? I wiped it down with hopes oil immediately, but am worried it will ruin the stainless steel finish.

WOW, really? Its a gun, it will be fine.

You would never be able to put a handgun in a duty retention holster. Lots of wear from that. You would have cringed when I dropped my P226 on the asphalt on one day. It left a nice pock mark in the slide. Get over it, the gun is fine, it was meant to be shot and carried.

You didn't mention what type of gun it was. I might understand if it was $2k+ 1911 but a carry gun does not deserve such worry.

I'm fairly certain the 409 on the gun will cause the stainless steel finish to peel off.

The SS finish is attached to a copper layer which is attached to the carbon steel.

It happened to my brother-in-law's gun. And it was either 409 or Windex. He had to soak his gun in buttermilk for 24 hours to neutralize the 409.

Just to be safe, I would get it in the BM soak overnight then oil it heavily tomorrow.
