Yes, I carried my firearm onboard an FAA-licensed aircraft for the full duration of the flight.
TSA couldn't stop me, either. In fact, they couldn't even touch me. Suckahs.

Okay, okay...so it was a hot air balloon, and I had the pilots permission...still, in this day and age, kind of cool just to say I did it.

Hot air balloons don't have pilots. They just have someone whose job is dedicated prayer from an elevated position with some oh crap levers to pull.

How many times did you look at your pistol, then at the balloon and wonder "What if I just...."

The FAR (Federal Aviation Regulations) you quoted is from part 135, which applies to "Commuter and On Demand Operations," or more simply put "charter flights." For example, you don't feel like dealing with all the B.S. at the airport with security and baggage fees and what not, so you call your local airport to charter a King Air to take you down to Florida or something. Part 91 is the section dealing with General Operating and Flight Rules. Most hot air balloon flights fall into this category. There is no specific language regarding firearms in this part to my knowledge. So, unless you broke some sort of state law by taking your gun to the airport where they had a gunbuster sign up, or some other applicable federal law that we're unaware of, you actually didn't commit a crime.

Without spending the next hour or 2 trying to not fall asleep reading federal statutes...

Is it legal to carry on a private plane from a non posted and non secure area'd small airport?

IE you and your buddy go flying in a Cessna at the local single runway airport...

How could anyone climb into a large wicker basket, suspended by thin little lines, and climb to several thousand feet, with explosive tanks of propane strapped to the side? No thanks, I like my feet planted on nice solid dirt. Hot air balloons had to be a redneck creation.

I've carried an M4 and a M9, in hands/holster, on a commercial flight with stewardesses and movies and everything.

I've carried in the Kentucky state capitol...but then any Kentuckian can carry a gun in the capitol any time. A permit is required if you choose to conceal it.
