My copy of Air & Space mag (Aug 2007) has an article about how 9/11 has changed that job description (Coffee, Tea, or a Knuckle Sandwich?) and self-defense is in there.

A couple of interesting quotes: "The FAA recommended in Jan. 2002 that any passenger disturbance, '

even those seemingly harmless, should considered suspicious; it could be a diversion for more serious acts'."
(The flying Imams issue comes to mind, doesn't it?)

The job of flight attendant has become more of a flight crew position whereas it used to be a position concerned with "appeasement".

To "protect the flight deck at all costs", the article mentions the tools and techniques being employed by today's attendant.

    Interesting.

Don't know where that author has been for the last 50 years, but in the USA, the FA job has been a "Flight Crew" job since long before 9/11/01. The number of required FAs is specified in the OpSpecs of all part 121 airlines. A 737 with only 1 paying passenger can not take off without the full compliment of FAs.

Even then, it'd still take an act of congress for him to get his 0.2 oz bag of peanuts.

    ...just kidding! :animlol:

Good point and true. They have always been overlooked and thought of as coffee maids, but they have always been highly trained professionals, who in the worst situations, always seem to do their job to the best of their ability. Their is no doubt about protecting the flight deck, I use first class a lot and there are many subtle but obvious of things that the rest of the passengers never see. I am not going to mention them, only one. The best being no more coach, passengers using first class rest rooms.....>

Does anyone carry peanuts anymore? I thought all the peanut allergic types got them removed long ago. You're lucky to get some stale pretzel sticks in First Class. Ain't anything in coach.

My wife always can tell when I am having to fly airlines; I bring home the mandatory dozen Payday bars. ;)

My mother was a Stewardess on DC-3's between Seattle and Anchorage back in the fifties. She said they were 8 passengers "luxury" liners and all seats reclined into sleepers. She said they had to be nurses, childcare specialists, waitresses and diplomats. Todays Stews have it way easy compared to those days. Could you imagine doing an all nighter between Seattle and Anchorage in a....DC-3! She did say that one time the Captain let her fly the plane for about 10 minutes over the Valley of Ten thousand Smokes.:)

Well if they flew over the valley of ten thousand smokes, either the pilot feel asleep and missed anchorage by about 200 miles. Or they were headed for Dillingham or King Salmon Bethel or somewhere as it's waay past ANC It is a very cool place

I believe the world second largest volcano to erupt only Santorini in 1500 B.C by greece was bigger, others have taken more lives, but for sure total amount of ash fallen and the depth. of ash this one really blew, 1912, don't hold me to history test. It is also where you see the pictures of Alaska bears eating fish in the rivers, this is the usual place Katmai. Also ate that idiot guy who played with the bears. After tourist season he snuck in with his girl friend, which they report saying was her time of the month. Not a good time to be in bear country in the fall, winters coming and the old emaciated bears are looking for food. anything to eat.
I admire his work to protect the Alaska Grizz, those bears at Katmai should not be hunted, they are semi acclimated to people and just makes a cheap hunt. If your going to hunt, do it fair. Go out on the Alaskan peninsula, or even Kodiak Island or any of the islands off Alaska. Then your really hunting, you and him. BTW I am not against hunting
I think he did more harm then good. May they rest in peace, they though they were doing right. Alaska is not a playground, even Katmai where bears are used to seeing people at a time of year when food is plentiful. Not scarce like end of Sept. maybe even getting into early Oct.

Oh well. Your Mother gets a silver star for flying ANC to SEA in a DC 3 oh my gosh, I complain when we have to do it in conquest 441 that's 290 KTS..

My gosh she would be right in it, nice thing about even the worst weather *Usually* your topping out at 15,000 or 20,000. She would have been right in the zone 8 to 10 full of ice and snow and turbulence and flying North in the winter against the predominate headwinds. What a lady, she had guts.
Great story, if she has any pictures scan them and keep them, their priceless.
A lot was lost in the Earthquake in Anchorage and the tidal wave that wiped Seward off the Map.
Oh BTW Alaska Airlines still serves some pretty good meals, they charge about 3 bucks in coach , free in 1st class, the also give out free soft drinks in coach and free alcohol in 1st but I don't drink. Just Apple Juice. Not a bad Airline I have been using them for 25 years and only once did they mess up and miss my connection. Brought me to the boardroom and they had a couch tucked back and I took a nap. for 90 minutes. Never lost my luggage and better trained pilots you will not find. These guys fly from Florida to Anchorage and Barrow, and now Hawaii. They have seen it all and the training is superb.

That flew more than just SEA-ANC. She mentioned White horse and other places she hated up that way.
I used to complain flying our Sabre80 from Houston to Anchorage. Thankfully I only had to do that twice. That takes about 8 hours with two fuel stops if the weathers marginal. Then I remember my mom and how that must have sucked in the DC-3 and it didn't seem so bad.
