i drive a '06 Mazda 3 that I love. I spend a lot of time on So Cal freeways because of my job and wondered about buying a used Prius so I could use the Hov lanes.

    Anyone buy used? Any issues?

Can't you just buy a FastTrack pass and use those lanes?
Also my Grandfather just bought a brand new Subaru and the emissions are so low it qualifies a a zero emission vehicle. If he wants to he can ask the DMV for an HOV sticker. Not sure how it all works.

Anyways, I would be leery of buying a used car with batteries.

Most if all 1st Gen Priuses '99-03 are due for battery replacement. 2nd Gens '04-09 are close due high demand and use. 3rd Gen are the best '10-15.

Neighbor bought one at ~90K miles. Needed the battery (the one that is part of the hybrid setup) replaced at ~120K, but it was $3000 (not the $10K that everyone originally thought when they came out). And I think that was at a dealer in Atlanta. You can save money by replacing individual cells, but that's considered a bad idea. To his point the car had 120k miles but the engine really didn't.

Something to note - there is another battery in there somewhere that operates the parking brake or something. Neighbor's went out and he couldn't move the car - couldn't even roll it out of the way! Kinda sucked because his other one was blocked in by it!

He said something about a 9V battery. Not sure if it is the same type of 9V that a smoke alarm uses. Surely not. That experience soured him on the car more than the problem with the hybrid batteries I think.

Beyond that it seems to run fine.

    To the OP.

You should probably use spell checker.

The word you are looking for is spelled:

    Pious
characterized by a hypocritical concern with virtue or religious devotion

I've known a few folks with the older Prii and they swear by them, but none have had batteries replaced.

Better research the cost before you take the plunge.

It would not be the batteries that scared me the most about a Prius

My dad is on her 3rd Prius. He loves them, and has had no issues with any of the 3. An agency I used to work for has at least 15 of them, several with over 300,000 miles. None of the batteries have been replaced. Other than brakes, rotors, tires and oil changes, I don't think anything has been done to any of them.

On second thought, my dad did have one issue. Mice built a nest in the engine compartment of his 2nd Prius, and chewed up a bunch of wires.

They really are exceptionally good cars. I know several folks that have them and all say the same as you. Very dependable.

If the engine or batteries give too much trouble, there's always this modification:
