Tragic. Will you still use that lane now?

I'm hoping they won't allow people with rifles to shoot in the front bays

I can give speculation, based on no info.

The bays are lined up one in front of the other. A shot from the back bay may have gone high enough to clear the dirt berm, but deflected down into the front bay (with force) after hitting something at the top of the berm, such as plywood, whatever holds the plywood in place, or rock.

That does not look like a smart design. Even with the berms, there is room for freak bullet behavior like the one you described. I saw another "smart" design on another range where there is only one backstop and the benches are grouped in distances like the signal bars on a cell phone. So if you are shooting on the 100yd bench, the 200yd guy is shooting from behind and next to you. The perfect recipe for disaster!

Whatever happened to "know what is beyond your backstop"?

Until we know what happened, we don't know what happened.

And even when we "know" what happened, we may still not know what really happened.

I won't speculate, because too many times its made me look like a knucklehead when the facts come out.

    Tragic situation.

This is how the backstops are set up according to the calguns thread. There is some speculation that the recent heavy rains might have eroded the dirt under the wood creating space and something for an errant round to ricochet off of. While that's just speculation, it would offer a plausible explanation of how the round got over the berm and then back down into the bay behind it.

Who would ever think that's a good idea despite how much barrier you have.

I want to make sure I have this correct. The bays are set one in front of another, and the rear Bay shoots over the front Bay?

I could not come up with a worse design if I tried.

You're telling me at that range, some people have to deal with bullets whizzing by them if they want to shoot from 100 yards? It would make a hell of a lot more sense to put the targets at different distances rather than staggering the firing line.
The range in the photo looks pretty ridiculous also. I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting there.

It looks like the 'shooting bays' are separated by that high backstop between them. The way the speculation seems to be going is the bullet came from the shooter that was behind the guy struck?

If so, it wasn't from the shooter's gun or a lapse in his safety protocol. That backstop is pretty high, but things happen.

There was mention of shooter's safety procedures in the linked article. If so that could point that it may of been the shooter's own gun??

That range design was a tragedy waiting to happen and it did. Terrible for everyone.

What's beyond the shooting lane could they have had shooters back to back shooting away from each other?

The current layout seems like an incredibly stupid design.

Why not have the shooters back to back like below. More lanes and not shooting at each other.

Tragedy. Don't like the bay design. I daily thank lucky stars I have my own range on acreage and don't have to shoot with anyone unless I invite them.
I know not everyone is lucky enough to do that , though.
    Prayers to the family.
